How does your car smell?

Put it lightly, it stinks! Well, it did before I started tearing everything out... Smelled like my Camaro was a diaper changing station in the the rear cargo area.

Anyway, I'm changing EVERYTHING on the inside. I will have fresh paint, new carpet, cleaned plastic panels, newer leather seats, and 4th gen dash. I'm hoping that with everything being exposed to some air it will air the vehicle out.

Any of you that have changed out everything in the interior, did you notice that "new car smell" or just a plain old BETTER smell?

Seriously though, if mine stunk it would be because of mildew/mold seeping in from a hole in the top.

Is your smell coming from the vents or the carpeting?

If it's the vents, run the A/C for a couple minutes and then spray a shot of Lysol into the A/C intake at the base of the windshield. Do this a couple times. Then, another rule of thumb when using the A/C is to be sure to cut off the A/C a good few minutes before I shut the car off. This way the vents get a chance to dry from possible condensation that's accumulated in the system. If you just shut off the car with your A/C still on, this moisture ends up reaking. The Lysol can kill the smell after repeated applications.

I'm sure someone can comment on what exactly is going on in the A/C if there is a smell coming from there. The Lysol thing worked for me in the past with another car.

If it's your interior, drop some change on getting your entire interior shampooed.

Hope this helps,

The reason I ask is I'm wondering if my car, with new paint (even on the inside) and the new carpet and the fact that EVERYTHING will be new (no musty smells), if it will smell new again.

i have mine almost 100% complete with paint and new interior and a few other goodies.

there is no real smell to the car anymore. well the windows are all open too. but it did have that musty closed up wet skunk smell when i started this project almost 3 years ago. i sit in the car working on it and there is no stink left. i wonder about new smell maybe i'll leave the windows up this week and see what happens.

i would go after the carpet with a nice cleaner. i used the home carpet cleaner on my truck it works good. either that or just put all new stuff its not that expensive

Jeff

If your getting a coolant smell coming from the vents when you turn them on, even just for a second then you have got a heater core going bad and starting to leak. you'll eventually get a pool in your passenger floor board. I dont know how hard they are to change on third gens but most cars are a pain in the butt. my 76 firebird i had you had to take the passenger side inner wheel well out, that was lots of fun.

Ohh yeah they also have this spray for your a/c box it kills all the bacteria and stuff on the evaporator core, all you do is find a spot that gives you access to the inside of the box and spray it. the dodge dealer did it on my dakota and it worked like a charm.

My car has a pleasent odor of well aged damp carpet in the trunk, combined with just a hint of coolant, and of course a little pine tree (New car scent). It smells just right

My 25th T/A still smells brand new though

Not much of anything, except when I wash the towel that I use on the drivers seat. Then it smells like a bounce dryer sheet.
No musty smell here, my '84 is a hardtop car.

Hmm. Sort of like new interior smell. becomming more and more like running a little rich smell. Also 'new car smell' thanks to the air freshener I subtly keep in the console

My car smells like Bounce facbric softener. u se it to keep out the rodetns and the scent has taken over. It really isn't that bad. before that though it just smelled plain or like a hint of any of the cleaners I had just used on the dash and interior. My car has never seen snow and rarely saw rain so no mildew or moisture here.

when your passengers side floor board is always getting wet and it smells like anti-freeze you are more then likely having a problem with your heater core. Engine coolant passes through it, getting heat from the engine, and its leaking coolant through.

Its very easy to by-pass, you just wont have a heater. Ive heard from many friends/family its a real pain to put a new one in.

Is it accessible from the engine bay fairly easily or would it make more sense to remove the dash?

I rip my interior out everyyear and have it completley shampooed from front to back, then lay down a good layer of scothguard, I also over Zaino the leather seats. The car looks and smells like new for the rest of the year and that says alot cause its a black on black leather interior. Also helps that i don't ever leave anything in the car nor drive it in the rain of bring dirty shoes in the car and i spend 5 hours a week cleaning the damn thing.

Mine smells kind of musty since it sits most of the time in the garage.

I've been in some GM cars that smell down right putrid.....like nasty BO. Makes me gag.

The 99 Z smells like fresh wonderful leather.....

The 92 Firebird has a smell so wonderful that I cannot possibly describe the joy that fills my heart every time I open the blessed drivers side door. The sensation that fills my nose is like that of a soft summer breeze on my skin. :hail:
