The tool the dealer uses is a long crow bar looking thing that probably has tongs to hold the spring while it compresses.

I had to take mine to the dealer since I played for an hour or so trying to get my spring installed. Took the tech about 5 seconds to install the spring. I was about 30 feet from the car when he did it so I couldn't see exactly what the tool looked like.

i know this isnt the best way but i used a solid elec. wire and a pair of vice grips to install them. mashed the spring in a vice, twisted wire tight, put it in, then cut wire and it popped in. didnt want to spend money on a tool that would never be used again.

hooga said exactly what i have seen done. Take some metal wire (that will hold, like piano wire). Wire it through the middle of the spring, then tie it from the outside and keep tying till it compresses. Then take it out, and do the same for the new spring, and put it in then cut it with wire cutters.

this is a parts site for a fiero but he sells a door spring compressor that works for any car.

http://rodneydickman.com/retail.html

Go there then click the tools tab, and it is on the bottom right list of tools. Its 17 dollars plus 5 dollars shipping but id say it is a hell of a lot safer than using damn wire to do it.
