Is the radiator ductwork required for proper operation?

I was at the junkyard today and saw an IROC that had the front bumper cover taken off. Anyway, Right in front of the radiator was this black plastic piece that was held to the body with push tabs. It kind of swoops down to the front grille opening where the fog lights would be mounted, and conects to two ducts. What does this do? Does it channel air into the radiator? I know that the lower air dam is required to prevent overheating at highway speeds. My car does not have these ducts. Is it a V8 thing, cause my car was a V6 originally. Thanks for any repies to this thread.

I don't know Camaros as well, but I think it's ductwork for the air intake. Very cool IMO, I wish there was a setup like that for 'Birds.

It does channel air better, it directs the air to flow to the radiator. It's better than having air going all around behind the front bumper cover. With our cars and their overheating happiness thats a good enhancement. But more importantly the lower airdam does a much better job at directing air to flow into the radiator since more air is directed that way than what goes through the front grille.

See this recent thread for more info. I don't think early third gens had this piece, but I am still unsure about that. Anyone know for sure?
