new 91 Z28

Hey everybody. I bought a single cat 91 z28 a few weeks ago. I found this site to be really helpful. So far I've used it to get the right p/n for the a/c elimination pulley and on which disk brake rear end to swap in. I have a G92 on the way with the correct proportioning valve and e-brake cables. I am building the car up for NASA CMC racing, it should be fun.

Anyways....I have a question I'm hoping you guys can help with.

When the tilt wheel is locked in place it still moves about and inch if pressed down and at an angle. Does anyone know what the fix for this is? I hope I don't have to change out the steering columb. That would suck.

Thanks,
-Ron

Sounds like the typical problem that GM columns have. You need to pull the wheel, pull the lock plate, and pull the ignition lock cylinder. I think that there is a wire harness on a collar on the steering shaft that can be pulled up and out of the way. Once you're into it that far, you should be able to see 3 torx screws. Tighten them up, and that should cure your "sloppy wheel" problem. You'll need a couple of special tools to make the disassembly and assembly easier.
First: Steering wheel puller.
Second: Lock plate puller.
Third: A pair of snap ring pliers.

If you've got a digi cam, take pics as you take stuff apart. One pic for each piece moved or removed. It'll make it a lot easier to put it all back together again.

Hey thanks man!

That doesn't sound too bad at all. In fact I will use it as an excuse to ditch the airbag and get a new wheel.

Thanks again.....

Whatcha gonna put it in Kandied?!

I got my '91 wheel in my '84 Z28. It looks pretty cool with the older gauges IMHO. (This was taken during the interior swap so there was alot unfinished.)

No, the G/T Grant steering wheel has no damage. Picture here.

Let me know (PM) whoever wants it.

Not sure if you guys are aware or not, Chevy did make other steering wheels that will fit on these cars. I just picked up a Cavalier wheel that I'm going to install once I buy a third gen. The whell that I picked up is a three spoke non airbag wheel. It has a nice thick rim and a pretty stylish appearance. They put pretty much the same wheel in the Luminas as well.
The best part? I paid five bucks at the junk yard for it and it'll install without any adaptors or anything!

I can't get PMs because I only have comp access at work.

How big a diameter is that Grant? I'm looking for something in the 13-14" range (need leverage since p/s pump not really road racing grade). Does it come with the correct adaptor?

As far as selling the airbag wheel its not in particularly good shape I'll take a pic during the holiday and post it. I have all the interior bits for sale too except for the dash. Mostly tan in color. If you are in the CA bay area let me know because I live in a studio apt and I can no longer walk inside because of the mountain of crap. Seriously though I must have taken out at least 300 lbs of stuff out of the interior. The speaker box (for 2 12s) was about 80lbs.

The cool part is the peels out at half throttle now.... :P

The G/T Grant steering wheel is a direct bolt on, no adapters needed. Just take yours off and put this one on. No problems at all. Even the horn button will work so that you can pass inspection.

If you have Internet access, you can have PM's. They are part of this board, there is nothing tricky involved, your computer does not matter as long as you have web access.

Inspection? The only inspection we have is for smog testing. How big is the wheel?

Try the PM I turned it on. I think the Co firewall might still block it though.

Inspection places should check brakes, steering, lights, horn, seatbelts and other safety items in every vehicle. In most states, you can't pass without a working horn.

I don't know the size of the steering wheel off the top of my head but I'll measure it when I get home and let you know.

PM's don't go through any firewalls. They are just plain text on a webpage, kinda like if you were checking your Yahoo (or whatever) web based mailbox. PM's are no messenger program or anything, just private board messages stored in your own mailbox here on the TGO. They should work flawlessly. I sent you one as test.

I measured the steering wheel last night, it's 13" in diameter.

Hope this helps.

I can't speak for every other state, but Washington only checks your gas cap (don't know why) and does the sniffer test.

It's a part of the emissions test. If your gas cap doesn't seal, it's letting fuel vapor into the atmosphere, which contains hydrocarbons. The gas cap should be sealed, so that vapors are pumped through the fuel evap canister and into the intake to be used by the engine.

Yea and that's only on the west side they do that. We eastern washingtonians don't have to worry about emissions at all.:lala:

Alright I pulled my whole steering columb apart as suggested. The 3 torx bolts were tight. It seems that the play in the wheel is due to the one of the pivot pins being loose. I hammered it back in but the problem is still there. Anybody know a fix for this? Do people make oversized pivot pins or something? Do I have to replace the columb?
