how important is the hood insulation?
Mine is all ratty around the pins that hold it on and just plain old and fraying. I don't have enough cash to buy another one right now and have debated on just taking it out, BUT with the cold weather coming I was a little nervous about leaving it out.
Does it really make any difference having it in? I live in Missouri btw.

nope.
1000s of people have been running without it for years without any effect on the paint or bodywork.
from what i heard, its suppost to be everything from "a fire blanket" that falls on the motor when its burning to a insulator for the hoods paint.
but in all honestly, its only there for two reasons.
one, it makes the engine seem quieter when you're selling the car new.
two, it hides the underside of the hood, making it look neater, and hiding the fact that the stamped bracing under a RS hood is the same as a Z28s...

GOOD!
I'm ripping that $hit out as soon as I go out to my car! I thought it actually served some kind of purpose.

I'm curious if it is supposed to keep the hood from "flattening" though.. seems that is a common occurance... and it's also common for people to take out the hood insulation... coincidence?

no it doesnt keep the hood from flattening. Its only use is sound deadening. Riped mine out when i had the steel hood on. Been running a fiberglass cowl w/o the stuff with no problems. I know that hood flattening can come from wind pressure in the headlight pockets. Thats what hood locks/pins are for.

Just in case anyone is curious... fire retardation is not something the liner does well at....(no PS, no combustibles added... just a plain BIC lighter was taken to mine for example purposes only... don't try this at home)...

most are like that.
you can also see the louver/powerbulge area that RS's dont have.
a soft peice of insulation isnt going to keep an older fatigued hood from "flatting" out. just aint going to happen. things get old and weak, it happens when a car is 20 years old. my stock steel hood wasnt painted underneath the insulation either
