SHould i buy it?
ok so browsing the classifieds today in the local paper i come across a 1991 Firebird with the 305 in it and a 5 speed with 88000 miles on it for $2500...only body damage is the front drivers side fender is bashed in a little, ran smooth didnt seem to have any major problems inteior is complely clean and very well taken care of. what do you guys think im a v6 guy so it would be a nice change for me, think i could get him down lower on it?

If you are looking to make some power, the 305 isnt worth it. This is coming from a guy with a 305. Im in the process of yanking mine out and putting in a built 350. The first time you loose a road race to a honda, youll feel the same of the "mighty" lo3.

not looking to make power with it at all, thats what the v6 is for
haha but anyways deadbird said it perfectly looking for a realiable car with some power, he saw the car last night, it really is a clean little car.....its a 305 TBI
it would be nice to have a decent car to drive around while my project car is down for the winter, i hate driving my automatic V6 that i have as an extra car, only thing its good for is getting sideways....but only in the rain

yeah except the 305 has way less miles, is a 5 speed, and has t-tops =) much better shape overall than my extra v6 with 156000 miles on it

Sounds like a good deal to me. I bought my '86 for $2500. Stock 305, automatic, 4bbl. original interior. Fresh paintjob. Only problem is the weather stripping is crappy.
If anyone knows the part numbers for GM weatherstripping and where to get it from lemme know.
Good luck

If youre just looking for a reliable car then i say go for it. The only problem ive had with my RS in the 30,000 miles that ive had it was a blown alternator.
Well, the alternator really desimated itself. A bearing came loose inside and spun out the internals... wierd..

Granted it was nighttime but, the interior appeared rather flawless (down to no rip in the drivers seat, good t-top headliner and the t-top bag is still there too). Black interior to boot.
The only concern I saw with it was it to appears to have been either in a frontal wreck or, there was a problem with the rad. support welds starting to break. There are corner plates ( 2 pcs of 14ga metal layered) welded where the top of the support meets the frame rails.
I would probably offer $1800-2000 if I were in the market for another 5sp daily driver. That's just a little under NADA and KBB low pricing. But, I'd also wait for a daytime look as well before settling on that price.

honestly with all my cars the worst problem i think i have ever had was a water pump that gave up and maybe an oil leak or to no big deal.
as far as the metal on the radiator support he told me when i got back(only cuz i asked) apparently a truck rolled down on top of the front end out at usi on the up ramp going to usi. this would explain the new hood off the 3.1 L so no big deal didnt ask him about the formula decals on the side though
i will be going to look at it in the daytime either tomorrow or thursday, wish i had a digi to take some pics of it, ill probably have my jack with me so i can look under it as well. i ran the crap outtve it....i mean gave it a good test haha to and from deadbirds house and it didnt give me any problems
i think for what i want it for it would be perfectly fine, im trying to see if i can get the funds together for it and think ill offer him 1800 with 2000 probably being the most ill pay for it. if i can get it ill finally be able to do the camaro like deadbird does his bird and finally start fixing it up right and getting everything done on it without having to rush it due to not having another car
oh and there is a subsittue for cubic inches, its a 3.4L that is turbo'ed

Speaking of that my car at the moment is making the wierdest noise. I don't know a WHOLE lot about cars but I'm learning. I thought it was the belts. Now I'm leaning toward the alternator. It's like a clicking sound. It gets faster as I rev the engine and slows down when I let off. Someone told me a may be the water pump. Maybe I'm wrong but that doesn't seem like it'd be the problem.
Sorry to get off topic but you guys mentioned the water pump and the alternator so apparetnly you've had these problems before.
Back on topic. We looked at a blue and silver '87 trans am that was just like the one I have. Except the GFX were cracked... the windshield was cracked... the vents on the hood were on backwards (with the slanted hole facing the fender instead of toward the engine.) and there was apparently a fuel leak!
Moral is: We looked at night after it had been raining. We couldn't see the body problems well and it had been raining so we couldn't see all the fuel that had leaked down the parking lot!

Sounds like a good deal to me, i would flash 2000 in his face and see if he'll take that. Cant hurt to try. We all know that the 305 isnt the stronglest thing in the world, i would take a 350 over a 305 any day but that doesnt meant that a 305 is a weak engine, i love mine.

Mine has plenty of power for me. It's mostly used for cruising and getting me from point A to point B. Very reliable. I love my care Plus if it looks good you'll still get noticed. Sometimes power isn't everything. Gotta have the mojo
Anyways. MY trans am is my first car... so no matter what anyone says and how powerful their car is... MINE IS BETTER... even though they could outrun me and leave me choking on dust

well i checked it out in the daylight....paint is in ok shape nothing serious few rock chips and what not....no leaks under where it was parked and i could tell i was the last one to drive it. got in it started right up no problems with the cold *** weather. no major leaks in the engine bay either overall a pretty good car other than that one fender. so i turned it back off got out and told him id give him 1800 for it.........
and he said ok woohooo, i will be ther proud ownder of a 91 Bird to add to my collection of a 91 and 92 camaro

that was a pretty good deal right there. sure the 305 wasn't built for speed or a lot of horsepower but they last forever. you were fortunate to find one with less than 120k on it for less than $3500 lol. awesome that you got a 91 because they made that bodystyle for only 2 years and IMO I think it is one of the best. So your 305 may not be as powerful as a 350 but at least you can make it sound good
