For those of you that have bolt on fiberglass hoods....

I'm going to be getting a Cervini's hood pretty soon here and had a question. Cervini's website says that their hoods are designed to be 100% bolt on utilizing factory hinges and latches. If you were to use the factory hood hinges WITH the hood support struts, would you crease/break the hood if you tried to close it? Does it have some steel reinforcement? I know that with some of the Harwood hoods that are fiberglass, you have to use hood pins/dzus fasteners because the resistance of the hood supports would cause the hood to break. Thanks for any info on this.

I recently put the Cervini 3"cowl hood on my IROC with no problems what so ever. I cautiously apply pressure evenly with both hands while closing the hood but thats just me. Fit was superb, you made a good choice!

Magman said it best. You should be fine. Just make sure you close and open it evenly. It may seem like you really have to pull down on the hood, but once you get past a certain point it should close easily.

I was just worried about trying to close the hood and then SNAPPING it. That would be $400 down the tubes. That would be no fun at all. Since the hood isn't all that heavy maybe I can get away with using some worn out hood support struts!

I have brand new replacement struts for mine that are made to hold the heavy stock hood up. My hood is a very cheap thin fiberglass piece of crap. It arcs a little bit when I go to close it, but nothing too scary.

You'll be fine.

It wont break the hood but it will stress it a little if the hood struts are still strong. You can buy new hood struts that were used for the 82-83 fiberglass hoods. Those would work perfect. Or you can do what I did, I had some weak struts lying around so I put them on when I got my fiberglass hood and they work great

My harwood seemed like the stock strong struts were way to strong, so i took them off. Do you have a part number for those fiberglass hood struts, when i talked to gm last time they couldnt find em listed

When I put my bolt on fiberglass hood on I traded my good struts for a set of weak ones from a friend. The weak ones hold my hood up fine and it closes easily.

When I put my Harwood cowl hood on I used new GM struts for the 82/83 "Plastic hood"(thats what GM parts book calls it)
Heres the PN 14045326
GMpartsdirect still carries them, but the price has went up in the past 6 months..
Hope that helps
Steve

I am using the stock struts from my original IROC hood, works great. The cervini's hoods are very thick and well designed, You can slam them down with gas shocks and they don't care. :hail: I have had the hood for a little over 3 1/2 years now.

my hood struts I'm using right now with my SS hood are tooo blown. If I go to the junkyard to pick up a used set....how will I know if they will hold my hood up? I would hate to go there...and pick up a set..just as bad..

I think the gm part # for the 82-83 fiberglass hood strut is 14045326.

I'm pretty sure they run about $75 bucks though....and I'm not going to pay that....it would be way better to get a used set...that work just as good for a fraction of the price. Wish they were the same price as the steel hood struts

Thats $75 a PAIR...at Gmpartsdirect...Its money well spent in my book, they hold up the hood every time, and I dont need to worry about hairline cracks...just my 2 cents worth
Happy New Year

I wouldnt pay $75 either At Autozone and PepBoys they sell hood struts. They were somewhere between 15-20 bucks each. They are not genuine gm but they still have a lifetime warranty.
