Does anyone know the best way to install the side and door gound effect pieces? I wasn't sure if there is a braket that goes on the inside of the body or somethin cause my car didn't have them originally, and I got a set off of a 91-92, and I don't know how to get them on now. I have the brackets that fit the pieces, but is there any bolts or claps or anything to hold those on? thanks

 

I just put my door pieces back on my 91 and there are a bunch of rivets on the bottom and 2 bolts on the inside edges of the front and back of the doors on the bottom. Then take off the door panel to reach the other bolts. Hope that helps

 

I just removed my gfx on my 92 and all that holds them on the inside of the car is nuts and a couple screws on the ends.

 

I am in the middle of attaching my 91-92 gfx's on my 88 iroc. What was GM thinking when they decided to drill wholes in the front fenders to attach the rocker panels? Now i have several large wholes cause of this and rust. Hey about the door skirts and removing the door panels, how the heck do we remove the door panels without ripping them up? I dont see any bolts/screws.

My brackets don't seem to have any threading on them (they look like giant pegs, thats my best description). I would get a picture, but my camera isn't workin right now, so I will have to try and get it later. Does anyone have a picture of what the bracket is supposed to look like?

 

haha. no , i wish those were my fenders. My fenders where SOO bad that i had to get new ones. Those are the front and back part that the rocker panels covered up. Those are actually pics of my BODY itself. SHoot me, what was i thinking lol

This is my first involvement with a 3 gen restore. When did Chevy add these braces? My wife had an 83 or 84 with no GFX so no braces. Thanks.

 

im not sure either. My 88 has those too, did u take your door panel off to take the door skirts off? If so, how did u take your door panel off??

 

Well, the door panels just pop out from the door then the black piece along the top is the tricky one. Seems to work better with the window down. It is just latched. Push the black top piece towards the door while lifting at the same time. There are several latches along the top of the door. You will have to do the same for each of the latches. Someone else could probably explain it better than I. Do a search here too. Thats how I found it.

 

Is there a something that is supposed to run along top of the rocker panel gfx's? It looks like something is supposed to cover it when it is attached to the body, like an extension of the door still?

 

I've recently added gfx to a non gfx car, I can show you what I did. I believe the original rocker brackets were welded on. What I did was I riveted a strip of aluminum to the rocker panel. I know this isn't quite as strong as the brackets the cars originally had, but i mounted the gfx before paint to make sure they were solid and lined up well. I also drilled holes in the fenders and rear quarters for the other studs on the gfx. it's kind of guess work to locate where the mounting holes should be, but even from the factory the brackets weren't mounted with great accuracy. I just held up the gfx and drilled some holes. Also, I alternated the placement of the holes that go into the top of the gfx and where the rivets hold the aluminum to the rockers. Anyways, here are some pics of the process.

the holes in the top of the rocker gfx are to mount it to the part of the bracket that extends out under it. I believe the gfx are held down with 7mm's w/ washers, but I'm not sure off hand.

no man your not missing anything, those screw wholes attach to the inner door wall. Hook the rocker panel up as normal, and you should see were they attach.

 

So you mean the top of the rocker extension end up being hidden when its installed? Ok, that helps out. And the other question is do you need new front fenders to make things fit? I know I need a new front bumper cover (and I still need a front spoiler), but will that stuff match up with what I got already?

 

To my understanding, i have new front 88 iroc front fenders and a new 91-92 front chin piece (front spoiler) and ive heard the front spoiler will match exactly up, but i have had no luck with people being able to tell me if the new fenders will match the rocker panels. I compared the old rocker panels front and back attachments and they dont look the same, the new ones are further apart then the olds ones, so who knows. You may have to drill some new wholes.

Eh, THOSE wholes arnt really that much of a problem. I took off my 1/4 back panels off to reveal a whole about the size of the 1/4 panel itself. now THATS gona be a challenge. Anyone ever tried welding on a new piece of medal to cover up something like that? Cause i dont think bondo is gona cover it lol

 

hey man, no, the 91-92 GFX's WILL NOT bolt right up to your 88 fenders, nore will the front lip piece. You will have to either drill new wholes or get 91-92 front fenders. I just found this out by myself about 10 minutes ago.

 

its just a slit you have to make in the fender, too k me 10 minutes.....with my dremmel

 

ok, I had already know that I would have to make holes because my car doesn't even have any gfx pieces to start with, but besides adding thoses, everything should still fit?

 

it should. does anyone know if 91-91 fenders will bolt the same way as the 82-90 ones will?
