Who here is running the factory plastic hood from the early third gens? Pics?

I am getting ready to get a hood for my car. I was thinking about a Jongbloed hood, but the local junk yard has a 'glass hood on an 83 or 84 crossfire car, I can get for 30 bucks.

Just wondering how it will look, anyone have pics?

I had one on my '83.... I hated the ducts at first.. but then I made them functional with some home-made screens and I loved it.

I have a question: are they in anyway reinforced so it doesn't crumple in an accident? I wanted to get one but I don't want my knees to be the first thing that stops whatever I hit.

I'm pretty sure the SMC material will break away like fiberglass.

It really is fiberglass.... I cut out my ducts and the material is almost identical to fiberglass. I did hear from someone (probably BS) that they stopped using them because there were cases of the top piece separating from the bottom piece at high speeds.

Yup, very close to fiberglass. When I got my SMC hood (came on my 89 IROC-Z when I bought it) it appears someone had drilled holes on the drivers side by the windshield to mount external guages, and then it looks like someone else used a surfboard fiberglass repair kit or something to patch the holes! Crazyness!! hahahaha.

Only place I know of to get em is used or at the yard. I dunno what year/car my hood came from, but its definately a SMC hood.

Hey Johny, what did you use to cut out the vents? I've been thinking about doing that as well, wasnt sure what tool to use.

Thanks to all for the replys. I went ahead and bit the bullet though, ordered a Jongbloed Hood from G&T.

I did mine back in '84 or so...I used a drill (1/8" bit) at the corners to get clean-radiused corners, then a dremel tool with a fiberglass-reinforced cutoff wheel to connect the drilled holes, finishing up using round and flat files to clean up the cuts for a very uniform appearance.

I left about 1/16 of an inch at the top & bottom to serve as mounting ledges in case I ever wanted to put the fake doors back on, using silicone sealer as an adhesive...

Yeah, it cuts pretty much like fiberglass. The hood on the turbo car in my sig is a factory "glass" one. I cut a hole in it originally for the air cleaner when it was N/A and opened it up a little more for the carb hat. I used a cutoff wheel, a file, and 80 grit sandpaper to cut and shape it. If they peel off at high speeds we sure haven't seen it, and I know we've had the car over 150 on a few occasions...
