led tail lights
Hi,
Anyone running led taillights/brakelights? Does the same led serve both fuctions? what size 19, 24 or 30 leds? Will the bigger ones fit without mods?
Thanks, Dora

Are you talking about the a custom LED setup or just those crapppy ~24 led replacement 1156/7 bulbs? Cause I'm running those crappy things, hehe.

well as you can see in the pics- the LEDs give you a eyeball effect- they dont dispurse light like a normal incadensent bulb will. now if they were relfected to the rear tail light housing and the housing was shiny- it would produce a much brighter effect- but having a LED replacement bulb- pretty much only gives you a bright dot the size of the bulb instead of lighting up the whole lense.

having LEDs pointing to the sides will make it a little better not much- for it to make the whole lense illuminate they need to be pointing back twords the refelctive housing. alot of newers cars either use like 200 leds covering the whole lense or point the top of the bulb twords the rear.

A retro like this does takes more time, compared to a Plug n Play type bulb, but the results will be much better.
The problem with the PnP type LED bulbs is they don't light up the housing enough, and for brake lights I don't want the person behind me wondering if I'm slowing down.
Plus the LEDs they use in those PnP bulbs are usually pretty crappy. Or they don't account for voltage spikes of the car, etc... I had some in my parking lights of my 4Runner. They lasted about 3 months before they started flashing and burning out.
You want to use true superflux LEDs from Lumileds. It's what the OEM manufacture use.
oh, just noticed the link to my thread wasn't working.
Hopefully it works this time

OK, the forum is adding an extra www.thirdgen.com for some reason. Just do a search by my profile, you'll find my thread. I think it's still on the first page of this forum anyways.
