Purpose of hood pins?

What are they actually for and are they really worth it?

To save weight, "lift-off" fiberglass or composite hoods for racing have no reinforcement to mount the hood latch or hinges. Hood pins keep the hood on the car in that application..

my hood has the holes for pins...but the hood on my car came off another z28 that was doing over 144mph in the 1320
