Stuck ignition switch

What would be a main cause if the ignition switch will only go into accessory and lock (won't go forward at all)? Yes it's the right key... Tried turning the wheel and moving the shifter while trying to turn the key and no luck.

actually now it looks like a binded actuator rod problem... Could it have slipped out or something got in it's way and does anyone have any schematics or pictures of what it looks like? Where does the line from the shifter lock connect to the linkage?

try twistin the steering colume. i know it sounds weird but twist the part that is pretty much agaisnt your gauges. i forget which way but give it a shot. if that doesnt work them you need a new lock cylender.

I had a similar problem with my old 84 camaro... vice grips got the car started but, after that, there was no turning it off again (aside pulling the coil wire then disconnecting the battery).

The problem I had was the lockout cable that goes from the switch to the auto shifter broke the ignition switch. Apparently over the years the plastic had gotten brittle and I bumped the shifter causing the switch to break. This kept the key cyl from turning and prevented me from starting the car... untill I used vice grips. That destroyed the switch and then wouldn't let me turn the car off...
Replacing the ign switch, as said, should solve your problem.
In some cases though, the tumblers & cyl dry out (in the key cyl) causing a sticking problem as well. Try a drop or two of oil (powdered graphite is better but, harder to find) on the key and see if that helps. If not.. probably time for a new switch. I got mine from Autozone for $15 and some change.
Just my opinion though....

thanks for the reply. I was talking about the rod that goes from the steering column down the shaft to the starter switch. It ended up being the wire that locks the wheel when you have the key in the lock position. It's missing a spring or something and got int the way of the rod. This is my car at home and I'm 2000 miles away right now so I don't know exactly what it looked like. Yea the lock cylinder was pulled out and it worked fine. Well all better now
