prepping car
I am currently sanding down my car...just taking off the clear coat and some base. It seems to have been painted before right over the original paint i guess. But after i get down to it, it seems to be alright. So my question is, I am priming it with some of this spray primer. its like 5 bucks a can. I and doing one coat. then sanding it with like 220 then putting another coat then wetsanding that to get the overspray off..If i dont go to the bare metal will this primer and method work?

i dont know anything about body work but i tried the same method before back in high school and i would stay away from it if you want a good looking paint job.

it can be done it rattle can but most will say no. It is not the best way to do it though. I rattled primer the front half of a bird last summer before painting. I dont beleive all the wetsanding is necessary since it is rattle. When i did it, i sprayed a couple light coats till it covered. I did no sanding unless something fell in the primer however there tends not to be much since it dries to fast. To play it safe, i would say spray a couple light layers and wetsand the last layer. 220 is a bit too much, i would use 600 or maybe a 1000 grit. Then just spray your paint and your done. Im not an expert at this so wait for some others to chip in their advice before taking mine.

If u use spray cans. Get good paint. Not menards 99 cent crap. Dupont makes a rattle can paint for spot in's. Prob going to cost alot. But atleast u know its going to last a while. The bad thing about rattle can paint is its single stage. So over time it's not going to hold up Buy a cheap gun and a cheap compressor. And use reg car paint. U will be alot happier in the end. Gun 100 bucks compressor 200 /300 bucks than get some dupont nason bc/cc .Are there any dents? If the car is stright. Just prime wetsand with 320 /400 than paint

i was told...if you paint your car the same color as before and if the paint isnt chipped and all that i can just sand off the clearcoat and get it all smooth and just paint over that..is that ok?
