Black stuff on interior welds... can I remove it?

Black stuff on interior welds... can I remove it?
I ripped out the interior, and I see this black rolled on asphalt stuff that's on most of the weld joint areas. Some of it is coming off, and so I'm wondering if it's ok to take the rest of it off. I'm going to be coating the car with a liquid sound deadener, so it will be sealed. I'd rather take the black stuff off now instead of having it come off later and taking my deadener with it. Opinions?

Sure, why not. Same picture I used for another post in the fab forum, but this works and shows you what I'm talking about.
You can see the silver area with black areas. The silver is where the black stuff has fallen off, and where the factory "welds" are.

It is a lot of work, but it comes off. It helps seal the seam from mosture; so removing it may open it up to future rust starting point, if you do not get it totally sealed with the liquid sound deadener

i took off that factory sealer on the welds and re-sealed it with seam sealer, it comes in a caulking tube so you can use a caulking gun, ive used 2 tubes now sealing everything it drys hard and its paintable after 2 hours, its still flexible so it wont crack or peel off. it kinda feels like polyurethane bushings, really hard rubber. i pay about 8 dollars CAD per tube so im sure it will be cheaper for guys in the US.
