What grit and primer for GFX?
I want to strip my gfx down to the plastic (or whatever material is used
), but dont know what grit I shoudl be using, and wet or not. Obviously I dont want too high, or it would take forever, and the primer wouldnt stick, and not too low either, or when it's primered it would be very rough.
What grit do I use to take them down to the bare skinnies (it has spider webbing all over).
Also, what primer should I use? Do I need flex agent in the primer? Would rattle can primer work ok on GFX? I'm not too sure. Thanks

use 180 - 220 to get all the paint off be careful not to dig into the fiberglass. Then wetsand it with 320 to make it smooth before priming.

Would it need to be self etching primer? Or anything in particular? You'll have to pardon my ignorance, I'm just starting to learn about all this stuff.

no need for self etching its fiberglass. as far i have found self etch is for bare metal parts. when i did mine i did one coat of epoxy to seal the fiberglass the 3 coats of 2k sandable hok primer, then wet sanded with 800 grit to get a smooth finish.
i also sanded all the paint off mine with 80 grit on the d/a it went real fast so have to be carefull not to gouge.
dp you have a d/a or doing by hand? if by hand go with 80 then the 120 if it needs more.

go with the 80 grit then.. it will be faster by hand then some final touch up with 120. don't be to concerned with the scratched they look mean but will fill right in with the coats of primers. and the wet sand will make everything nice n smoooth and the scratch will hold the paint nice and strong.

How does one go about prepping the surface after sanding, with all the dust and all. I was told to rinse it off with water, but wouldn't that just be inviting rust. I tried blowing it off but it didn't all come off. I am new at this, so thanks for all the suggestions.

i use house of kolor post sanding cleaner after blowing the most off and then tack rag before spraying. post sanding cleaner is great, you can even clean your base before clearing with out no harm. its water based use two wads of paper towles on wet one to dry, change often.
