crazy decklid idea

Maybe I'm just nuts. This idea just popped into my head that sounds pretty feasible, but if any of the local experts see a problem with it please speak up. I want to mold the decklid into the body, no seams, completely flush, and remove the electrical pull down/locking assembly all together. I need to know how how trim - able a lexan rear window would be and if it would be possible to attach it with something like a locking hood pin kit, and remove the hinges as well. If I where to re-work the window seals, can't think of any reason why this would be a problem either security wise, or leak wise. Like I said though, maybe I'm just nuts.

Why? If the metal lid doesn't open you lose alot of access to the rear trunk area, might as well just make it completely sealed and no moving glass either. If you have to ask then there is no way you're going to get it to seal properly, specially using hoodpins. Seems like a hell of a lot of work for no reason at all. Not to be negative, just seems pointless.

Perhaps it will make more sense if I explain my plans for the car. For the most part this is going to be a weekend cruising car, something to take to the car show. I intend to put sound equipment in the rear of the car, so access to the space will not be necessary after the install is complete. I am thinking that the glass can be removed for show purposes. This is not something that I am planning to go to the shop tomorrow and do, it's just an idea that popped into my head. I thought I should bounce it off a few more heads before I really got into it.

Still not sure why. It seems like one of those crazy ideas that take alot of work, serves no purpose, and no one is impressed by. Really I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't know about this one.

I've spent several hours searching for someone who has done something similar, and found nothing. My motivation for doing this would be nothing more than smoothing a few lines and doing something different. Honestly I'm not concerned with the amount of work involved, I enjoy my spare time by tinkering with things and fabricating. On a different note, I have no experience with hood pins. I don't know how tightly they hold a hood so maybe that part of my idea is flawed. That's fine. No biggie. These are the pins I had in mind.

If you have a better Idea, please, fill me in. I'm certainly open to ideas and suggestions.

So your plan is similar to the Winged 87 IROC Prototype car, where the glass lifts only.

Yeah, that IROC prototype is what popped into my head too.

I would spend some time looking at the hatch on a C4 corvette to see if you can simulate it. I think that the IROC prototype used a mechanism very similar to a C4s.

It seems to me that this would eliminate a few of the common problems on thirdgens. No more need to worry about a misaligned decklid or worn out latch bits. No more ruined rubber seals from the girlfriend slamming the hatch.

Slamming the hatch doesn't ruin the hatch seal, it ruins the motor. Thats the only benefit I see from this... stupid hatch motors.

What if you need to change tail light bulbs. Might be a long reach and not to easy to remove the rear panel.

I guess there's no reason to even have that rear plastic piece then. No more spare tire either. But for a show car I guess its not a big deal.

If you didnt want to mold it all so it was seemless Id say do something like this.

Find a Vert deck lid. install it as normal. and then get a lexan window, but and shape it to size and make just the frame for that open. Use the C4 latch assemble. wouldnt be hard at all.

I was gona do this untill I desided to use everything from the vert and convert mine all over.

This way you still have the well for trunk space You can still get to the tail lights, etc..

TPI383, do you have any pictures of the side of the car with that setup? I had planned to switch to LED's. I'm not going for a totally smooth look. Mostly just a few small things to set my car apart from the crowd. It seems like this is a not too often done modification, that makes it somewhat more appealing. I want to keep a somewhat stock look, just bits here and there that make people look twice.

I like that idea. It would have the same lines as a vert, but have a hard top. Now if you could do this and also make it a targa top, then that would be somthing to see.

Good luck with the build.

Yeah, I thought you would give us a pic. I new you are working on it. Cant wait to see the final product.

Now just think if it had the hatch changed like we described.

but this is what it all ended up as now.
