Hood Pop?

Not sure if this is the right section to put this in, but Ima try anyways...

Okay, so my hood has gotten increasingly more difficult to pop since I've owned the car (3 yrs). Since I've had it, the hood shocks have been dead... I've just gotten a new pair, which will be put on shortly.

When I pop my hood, it makes the noise like it should have popped, but the hood doesn't come up enough for me to grab it to "unlock" it and open it completley.

It used to be, I'd pop the hood, then pull a couple of times on the corner of the hood by the windshield, and it'd pop up the rest of the way. Now however, it takes two people (one on either side) and then half the time it STILL doesn't pop up completely!! I have to keep popping it, pressing down on the hood to reclose it, and pop it again. It's frustrating, as I'm sure you could imagine.

Anyways, I'm wondering what exactly I need to replace to avoid this problem? I pull the hood pop and it makes the noise like it's popping (like I said), but the hood doesn't pop up far enough. Any insight would be appreciated.....

**EDIT** Someone had said they thought that perhaps if I had working hood shocks it would fix the problem? I don't know how true this is, since my hood shocks have never worked since I've owned the car and the problem has increased, but I thought I'd throw that in there...

My old bird did that even when the struts were working. My new T/A doesn't do it as much. If it gets worse I plan on getting hood pins and losing that cable release.

check how clean the release is sometime they stick and don;t release all the way. some wd 40 does a good job of cleaning out old grease and then a nice coat of white lube will do the trick. if that does not help check the spring on the hood and see if it is positioned ok and streached out enough it could be tired. i would guess its the latch though. let us know how you make out.

Mine does the same thing, Its got new gas lift supports and the latch is lubed good. All i do is lift up with slight pressure under the hood by the headlight and a lil smack with a closed fist on the front center of the hood and it pops right up!

I had the same problem, I just covered the latch with white grease and opened and closed it a few times to work it in... haven't had a problem with it since

same, had to use the "beat the drum" method to get it open, heh
part of the problem is the groove it wears into the striker, but 95% of it, is it needs some lube
i took it off, cleaned it, greased it completely.. works like new

I had that problem also for a while.. new shocks, cleaned and greased.. and then I even still had to reposition the latch. Its better now... but still every now and then... it wont release.. I think I may change the spring... however... thats minor.... I got other things I wanna do to the car..... Spring is an easy fix when the big stuff is done

The previous owner of my car had a light front-end impact which left things a little misaligned. I fixed everything I saw without getting in to deep for the weekend. My hood closes perfectly now and pops just fine, but when I go to pull it open, it lifts maybe 2" and I have to pause for a moment before pulling it the rest of the way open. In my case, the hood shocks are good, but I believe the hinges are not aligned symetrically. Could be a starting point if anyone has ever had to unbolt the hood.
