help with undercoating, POR 15, etc, etc
I saw my 91 GTA up on a lift the other day, and I noticed a decent amount of surface rust underneath the car. I was thinking about taking my car to a shop and having the entire underside scrubbed/undercoated/POR 15'd/ etc etc. Any ideas where I could take it in upstate NJ? How much $$$ will I need to pay? how much tearing apart will the shop need to do to get in all the nooks and crannies?
Thanks
Bill
P.S. I've noticed a little bit of rust on the metal trim around my rear hatch. I was thinking about going to a body shop to have that trim painted with black por 15. Should one coat suffice? Will I need to put a second coat of regular black paint over it? I want it to look brand new.
Thanks
Bill

on your rear hatch part, you don't want por15, as it's exposed to light. why bother top coating por15 then?
That part doesn't get exposed to much rocks or anything like that, standard automotive paint would work best. Any autobody shop could do that for you, if you don't feel like hitting it with a spray bomb.
Depends on the underside. If you want EVERY square inch of the underside of your car painted, (like i'm doing to mine), you'd have to remove the gas tank. (and everything that holds that in), so that's a huge hassle. If you just want to see black paint underneath, then much less... But rust will start in the tiny spot you didn't paint, and spread, so...

what's wrong with exposing por 15 to light? does it discintegrate (sp?) in the light?
and for my underside... yes, i want the whole thing riped apart, all the rust removed, and por 15/undercoarting all over that. Where can I go to have this task completed? How much $$$ am I looking to spend?
Thanks,
Bill

por15 fades when exposed to light. my boss at works says it does disintegrate, turns to dust and wipes off, but that's not what POR themselves claim...
you just have to top coat it for use when exposed to a lot of sunlight... (ie, undercar is fine as is...)
I'm doing that task myself, but I imagine a body shop could do that for you, but to remove the axle and gas tank to get everywhere, including exhaust, and maybe lines, and perhaps tranny.... (which is what i'm doing, as i'm doing a full off resto...)
..would be expensive. Extremely.
Check with shops, some places like detailing places advertise a cost to undercoat your car for $x, see what they remove in that process...
