Center console removal.
I was wondering how difficult is it to remove the center console from the 82-84 Firebirds. Mine could benefit from a new coat of paint. I don't want to take out seats anymore times so I was hoping it is just a matter of finding all the bolts and lifting it off. Anyone out there who fitted a 4th gen interior should know. Can anyone tell me the steps involved in taking it out. Is it difficult or easy to do?
Thanks.
Thanks.

its a piece of cake really...
Remove the radio/HVAC control panel. "torx" screws are used. There should be a couple screws under the plate holding the top of the forward console to the dash. Open your glove box and you'll see two 10 mm screws. Look under the handle for the ebrake and you'll find another screw.
If you have an automatic you'll need to remove the shifter ball. There is a U shaped "staple" looking thingy holding it on. You'll need a flat head screw driver to pull it out. It's located in the front of the ball...away from you if your sitting in the driver's seat.
There are four torx screws holding the shifter plate on the four corners. Open the ash tray and you'll find another screw below the cigarette lighter.
If you have a manual just unscrew the shifter *** and that's it.
That should do it. Anyone else chime in if I forgot anything.

Man if you were asking about '87 and up I could easily help you out, because I just accomplished this, but I put in a console from a '91. If you are going to put in a fourth gen console go with '97 and up. The lids on them swing over like the 3rd gens but '93 to 96 have the lid swing up and they have a tendency to not latch and are just more noisy with their design. If you want a grey console find one from a '97 to '99. If you want a black one you will need one from a '00 to '02. Now if you already have one this information is useless, but maybe to somebody else.

Thanks for the information. It is good to know that it should be straight forward to remove.
I am not replacing the centre console. I am removing it to paint it as there are some scuffs on the back of it.

I'm sorry for replying so late, but the computer was fried and now just got fixed today....so anyways I'm a moron and didn't even see that you were just needing to paint it.
