look for a circuit breaker in the circuit if there is one there is probably a short somewhere and the wire is getting to hot.
did you put new bulbs in the cluster when you changed it?

It could be the turn signal flasher. The one in my '84 Trans Am went bad. Maybe 1984 was a bad year for turn signal flashers!
It would flash and then stop and the turn signal would just stay lit in whichever direction I was turning. If I reached under the dash and gave the flasher unit a tap it would work again a few times before the who process started again.

This is a bit after the fact, but if the original cluster functioned properly, your best bet is to swap only the speedo head.

whats wrong with the spedo? and thats not how you fix things by just guessing its a part and replacing it thats how you waste time and money you need to find exactely where the problem is and replace or fix that area

If the original cluster functioned properly and the new one doesn't, reason would dictate that the new cluster is at fault. If the new cluster's speedo works and the original cluster functioned as designed, put the new speedo into the orginal cluster and ride off into the sun set. (I've sold 8 or 10 clusters and my advice was always to swap the speedo head into the original working cluster--just seems to elevate problems as described.)
