Paint Clear that repairs scratches
Someone on a local f body site in MN posted this...pretty damn cool
NISSAN DEVELOPS WORLD'S FIRST CLEAR PAINT
THAT REPAIRS SCRATCHES ON CAR SURFACES
TOKYO (Dec. 2, 2005)-- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails.
“Scratch Guard Coat” contains a newly developed high elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car’s painted surface. With “Scratch Guard Coat” a car’s scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch.
The water-repellant paint also has a higher resistance to scratches compared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with “Scratch Guard Coat” will have only one-fifth the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint. Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces.
“Scratch Guard Coat” is effective for about three years.
“Scratch Guard Coat” will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future. The paint will be applied to the car’s chassis, bumpers, door mirrors, among other parts.

I'm calling
on the pictures. The camera is in the exact same location for both shots and its exact same time of day and the car is parked in the exact same spot as seen by the sun reflecting in the hood.
Photoshop.

That is the link to an online article about it. It's no lie. This kind of thing seems like a natural progression. I would doubt that it would be great for a show car but for dialy drivers it may cut down on the little things that always seem to knick. Also its not a chop...the pics are similiar, but not exact. I think there are some things even photoshop can't master. If they can get the price down to be comparable to other paints they might have a winner on their hands. A few thousand for the respray seems a little high. ( also the link was on the main Yahoo News page, so it is valid)

I'm not calling bs on the article, just on the pictures they used. They are most defiantly not before and after shots. Odds are that the scratches were photoshoped onto the car in the bottom picture for the before shot.

in any case who cares if they doctored the shots, if in the end the product lives up to the hype and performs like it should?....this is definatly a daily driver thing I would imagine, I keep getting the sense that it's gotta be thicker than all hell and you probably sacrafice some luster and shine

Chrysler actually experimented with a "self repairing" paint a few years back, so the technology has been available for a while now.
We actually sell a chip resistant clear that's basically for rockers and the leading edge of the hood. (toyota's been doing this for years.) Kind of expensive, remains rubbery to the touch, (not soft, but vinyl-like.)

true alot of similar products have been used and tested...my buddies 95 300zx has a similar type of paint on his rockers that is chip resistant...however you can tell the difference between that paint and the rest of the bodies paint
