Dying Seatbelts

Alright so i got a hell of a deal on ebay for a set of black seatbelts...almost mint cept the front 2 got slight fading going on...

So that brings up the option of dying them. Anyone who has done it can you come and share your experiance. I dont wanna hear its gonna weaken them unless youve tried it urself and it turned out bad. So anyone what kinda dye did you use how did it hold, does it bleed at all. Just any type of info on this.

I searched and just found people saying they have dyed there seatbelts but no one actually explained how.

Thanks, Steve

ok - I went to Wal Mart and got the black dye they sell near the bleach. I followed the instructions and mixed up a bunch in a trash can. I then dyed all my red original seat belts. The results are less than spectacular. After many hours of sitting, the plastic pieces turned black and the belts still weren't. Not only that but the dye seemed to make them less flexible.

I then tried the black vinyl paint in a spray can - this definitely turned 'em black, but they were real stiff and just about impossible to put in and out of the retractor.

This was about 3 - 4 years ago, and I've only ever heard of one person getting them dyed and being happy with the results. I eventually went and bought new 4th gen black front belts from gm and am still happy with those

well thats the kinda responce i wanted! lol.

See i just dont know to live with a little bit of fading or try to dye them. I figured id only use a little bit not too much dye. How about bleeding did it ever get anywere on your clothes, anything?

I saw that spray at advanced auto but ya it said vinyl on it.

I've used those spray cans of dye before without having it bleed off. You might have to use a couple cans though to get it to the desired color. However, up close it probably still won't look the deep black color you see in modern cars. Good luck.

Try some black liquid shoe polish on a small area and see how that works. I used it on the badly faded and stained horn button and worked great. Just a thought.
