Body work / paint materials of choice?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, trying to figure out what the paint of choice is, brand, type etc.... I am going to be stripping my car down to the metal, epoxy primer, primer, base coat + clear coat. Trying to figure out what materials work the best with each other and are generally the easiest to use for a doityourselfer. Also looking for an idea for what types of filler works the best.

Trying to get this sorted out so I can start aquiring materials.

Thanks in advance for your help on this

If u are striping the car to bare metal.I would use a etching primmer before the epoxy. I don't have to but the etching primmer goes on real thin and it does not cost much. I did xpndbl3 car the same color u wanna do yours. I used depont nason. Very easy to use. depont has a very differnt lines nason being the cheapest. But everyone is going to say a differnt brand paint. Cuz its what they like or what they are use to sparying.. I feel all your big name paint companys paints work good. As long u follow there recommendation on how to use them. O and I would also use a sealer. For depont u have to use there sealer they have value shades. For that color you would use #5. With out it will take more coats of paint to cover...

I also have been using the Dupont Nason brand with good results. The only problem I had with it was when doing red. It tended to not cover as well so it required one extra coat of paint. No big deal though, the burnt orange and black came out great. Great paint for first time painters. The clear I've been using is Xtreme. Its alright but I would recommend the next up compatible clear.

As far as epoxy primer. I used the Omni brand. Worked out just fine. If I remember right, I got it from autobodysupply.

The best place to get your paint will be your local paint shop. Just look in your phone book. This way they can make sure that everything that you are getting is compatible. You can run into trouble when switching around brands.

Since you want to use an epoxy primer, go with PPG, they make the best epoxy primer available.

No need for Etch Primer as the Epoxy is intended for bare steel.

A book that I found useful and really informative is "How to Paint Your Car" by Dennis W. Parks & David H. Jacobs, Jr.
Its thru Motorbooks Workshop, and the ISBN # is: 0-7603-1583-3. (www.motorbooks.com)

Its pretty good. Takes you from the basic run down of what painting is all about, thru choosing the correct paint/supporting products, thru everything u need to do along the way to paint your car and beyond.

It was only $20, well worth it.

just picked up that book off ebay for $15 shipped.

I think I need to find a local place to talk to about what materials will work best for what I am looking to do.

Depends on how its mixed. some products are mixed 1:1 some 4:1:1 or some other concoction. so amount of sprayable product depends on actual product being used.

I did my vert in Corvette Le Mans Blue code U 933 L
I did only the door jams and the out side and it took two sprayable gallons of paint. Dupont Chroma base 1 gallon to Dupont Basemaker 1 gallon.

Clear coat is pretty easy. Took under a gallon of PPG Speed Clear with then a quart of reducer and a quart of hardener. Took the wholle gallon of Primer cuz i wanted to do a lot block sanding.

Base
Clear
Primer
Epoxy

Gallon of each?
BASE: 1 gallon and an extra quart for the jams - 3-4 coats
CLEAR: Gallon - 3 good coats
PRIMER: 2 quarts - 1-2 coats
EPOXY: 2 quarts -you only need one good coat of this

Obvously if you want more or less coats then the amount of paint is going to change.

In what world can you cover the entire car with two coats of primer only useing a pint of material?
