yes, I watched my mechanic do it for me on my last car... I think he just pushed it inwards, then turned it a bit. It's almost like a key, it's got a tang on the end of it... Then once you pull it out, you can unplug the cord from it....

I hope someone else has a better explanation of this though...

Just get a good grip on the turn signal lever and give it a good tug it will come out. If you have cruise control disconnect the harness under the dash and attach some mechanics wire to it, then pull it through the column. Then attach the wire to the new harness fish the mechanics wire through the column and fish the harness back through the column and reconnect it. I did mine in about 15 minutes without removing the column. Good luck.

Pull and twist, the same way you would unscrew a screw (CCW), I beleive.

Removing the base involves dissassembling the upper part of the steering column

Youll need a special tool to removed the wheel and then another one to compress the lil spring in the thingy...

Its a pretty involved job, not expensive, just alot of swearing

THe base part went out on my old v6 and I didnt want to tackle the lil spring since I didnt have the tool at the time so i scavanged the base from a theft recovery column since it was already smashed open and lengthened the wires and stuck a dummy multifunction in it and routed that to the console glovebox. Unpluged the one in the column and plugged up the one I had lengthened. Yeah its a ******* way of doin it but no one ever knows till its raining

The base controls ONLY the wipers, cruise is in the stalk, turn signals are on the interior of the column, headlight hi/lows are on a rod inside the column

If you have cruise control disconnect the harness under the dash and attach some mechanics wire to it, then pull it through the column. Then attach the wire to the new harness fish the mechanics wire through the column and fish the harness back through the column and reconnect it.
Must have gotten very lucky, Ive replaced the stalk on 3 columns, the lil plug ALWAYS got snagged inside the coulmn and Id have to cut it and route the new wire outside the column

edit - Whys this forum censor the word red-neck?

Yeah, ever since messing with the steering wheel, now when I go to push my turn signal up (right blinker), it won't stay there, you have to hold it there for it to work. Has anyone had this problem and knows how to fix it?

There is a plastic cam inside that keeps it in place - that's probably broken or misaligned - requires pulling the wheel as described above.

Oh, you mean the right after you take the wheel off? I see it, but I don't know how to align it. I see there's 2 arrows that must be aligned, but I did that, put the wheel on, and it still does it. Also, if you turn the wheel either way, it catches and is quite annoying and not smooth as before. And the signal still won't work right. This is irritating.

OK - sorry I can't tell you more - it's been 2 years since I was inside there, and I have a hard time remembering yesterday - I do seem to remember it was somewhat of an irritation to get it aligned just right, and keep it there long enough to get the wheel back in.

But ... I believe I saw entire signal lever replacements in the Help! section at Advance Auto for cheap - GM used the same lever for many years, and alot of this stuff in there - I may be wrong, but I thought I saw them there - check it out - if it's there, you could try just replacing it without a high dealer cost.
