Photo eye in dash?

I noticed some sort of photo electric eye in the center on my dash that faces down and appears to be factory installed. What does it do? I want to remove it and use the hole to install my fuel pressre guage line.

That's a little light that is supposed to shine down onto the radio/AC/ashtray to help you to see.

It probably doesn't work, and that's why you've never noticed it. It's just a light

How do you change the bulb? Do you have to take off the top dash?

it's definately not a 194 bulb, and you have to take off the dash pad to change the bulb. there is 1 7mm screw holding the light to the dash after you remove the pad.
