To remove the airbag steering wheel, do I have to employ the airbag?

Nope!
There are 2 long screws (if I remember right, if not, they are long bolts) that attach the bag to the steering wheel. They come in from the back of the steering wheel.
Then, just unplug some wires in the back, and you have removed the airbag.
Then, you remove the steering wheel like a regular steering wheel.

Hope this helps,

George

I don't know what it means to "employ" an airbag, but you certainly don't need to deploy it

Just check out this tech article:

I'm removing my aribag too for an older TA steering wheel. The only issue that I've wondered is this...When the airbag is functioning properly the SIR light will flash a few times when the car is started. It's never happened to me but according to the service manual, if the airbag is not functioning properly then the SIR light will reamain on. If I remove the airbag wheel will the SIR light stay on or will removing the fuse aid this problem?

When I replaced my airbag wheel, I had the dash apart at the time, so I just pulled the bulb for the SIR light.
