First time painting stripes. Need some help

I'm going to be painting my camaro in few months. I'm planning on doing one large stripedown the center of the car with pin striping on each side. The car will be black with and the stripping red. I'm wondering if I should throw down the red on directly on the primer then back mask where I want the stripes and throw down the black. I figure if I layed down the red over the black it might come out darker than I want.

Just making sure. I've seen it done the other way before with silver striping being layed down over red on the show muscle car, but from what I've seen, chip foose and west coast customs always spray the color for the stripes first then go and back and mask off the striping and spray the primary color for the car.

Another thing, how long do I need to wait before doing the masking and what kind of tape should I use?

Use 3M fine line tape. A 1/4" stripe is the usual size. And the instructions that come with the paint should tell you how long to wait before you can tape it.

Also, make sure the tape doesn't lift off around the edges and leak. And pull it off VERY carefully or your paint may come with it.
