Painting & Color Q's?

I have a 91 camaro and I just put on a new hoos after a front end collision along with a nose and front skirt. I eventually will be getting the whole doghouse painted and clearcoated for $1100. But for now - I was curious on how hard it would be for me to go and purchase some paint for my (Teal Metallic) camaro.

Where is a good palce to by this paint and how do I find my correct color code?

I have an (alledged) Proffesionl Paint can/spray that hooks up to my compressor. Do you think I could get a decent look on my camaro if I painted the front end and hood myself?

Is there a custom painting section somewhere? Thanks everyone!

IF YOU WANT A HALF way decent look, you need to buy filtters and a dryer for your compresor, otherwise it will fish eye severly. than you need to buy an actuall spray gun, a cheap one will do for a temp job. practice before you paint on the car. you paint code should be mystic teal, 79/WA320C most likly in your left door jamb. aqny other ?s

What types of filters and where can you get them?

It's been sanded - so once I prime it I can sand it down smooth and I would apply first layer of paint correct? After the 2nd coat - how long does it need to cure?

Temperature in room?

Thanks - that color code seems correct. Is there a type of paint that I should use - like a certain grade?

And what type of clearcoat will I need and does it apply the same or differently?

Thanks - I know thee are alot of questions - but that helped alot!

Well - the cheaper the better. The whole reason Im painting is beacuse I'm going to need to save up a bit longer for the 1200 and Id rather spend like 200 and get it painted now. Someone told me 2 quartz would be plenty to paint the hood and nose - Im just not sure what type of paint to buy and what all I need.

Quick guide possibly?

This air regulator and filter look like what I need? I have a astro pneumatic spraygun as well.

Thanks!

Macco could probably paint the front half for $200.

just save yourself the headach, cause thats all your going to get, with no booth your just asking for problems, and a gradge doesnt count as a booth(if this is your route, be sure your water heater is not in the gradge, that open flame can get nasty with a room full of flamable material. so, i ganna have to use my favorite saying.......

uh o, better get maaco!!!!!!
----------
but, doing it your self can be a big headach, but if you want, just for temparary paint, look in the phone book for local paint supliers, call give them the paint code, and if you want the cheapest, OMNI paint brand is the way, just dont expect it to last long. i did an entire car for 200, base and clear. get those fillters, the will help, but change so you use them all, compressors put out alot of water, it will burn up those filters fast, i use one a week and iv got 2 dryers and 2 water filters.

Well - no offense - but if the title was "What company should I go with to paint my 3rd Gen?" - - that would be a great answer I would probably consider.

But I am curious about how to do it myself - - not someone else doing it.

Thanks for the tip though!

Yes - one of my friends father is a painting tech at Ford here in Louisville. He gave me alot of pointers as far as where to paint and how to's. ex.

Wet down floors
Plastic around walls
65 - 75 degrees
Paint middle out -straight strokes 6-8" away - 50% overlap.

I think I can get it done and make it look halfway decent. What type of paint again?

and what about sanding between coats?

Thanks alot guys!

SANDING BETWEEN COATS!

Only if you screw up and need to start over! The sanding should be done before you paint. You let each coat flash for the recommended time by the manufacturers directions.

You then tack off the car with a tack rag. Spray next coat.

What type/model of spray gun? Do you know how to adjust a spray gun pattern properly? Where do you plan on painting it? Will your house explode from the HIGHLY flammable fumes? Have you ever sprayed before?

Buy a few books, do some more reading, and you could probably pull it off. For the amount of trouble it would be cheap and easy to Maaco it.

Just remember knowing how to fix mistakes like runs and proper technique take time behind the gun. Don't be suprised if you run the hell out of it or leave streaks or get over spray all over something you didn't mean too. It happens and it always will.

It is a learning experience and I LOVE painting cars so if you step up to the challenge I hope you have fun and get the results you're after.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I am really anxious to do this. Like I said - I believe I have everything I need to do this - it will just be the first time for me!

Thanks!
