fiberglass T-tops

For all of you T-top Firebird owners, I am currently in the process of making a mold for fiberglass t-tops. As you all probably kno they're heavy. They're very heavy, and they can weigh ur car down alot. That's why i was wondering if any of you would be interested in maybe buying these. They probably wouldnt be great enough for daily driving but i will be able to gaurantee you that they will be light enough and strong enough to race with. So if you have a roll bar (i dont want to be liable for any roll-over accidents) and are willing to take a chance would any of you f-body lovers be up for that?

Plenty came with factory lexan t-tops

They weight practicly nothing and have quite a bit of flex as well as being transparent (ignore the lovely stars)

Doubt youll get as much attention for fiberglassed t-tops

If they were professional looking I bet a lot of people would want them to have painted the color of their car. The same way the early c3 vettes were.

Even if they were rough I still might be interested. Any idea how much a set would cost?

Raw carbon fiber would be better, esp. if built into the factory mounting rails.

Umm it wouldnt cost that much for a set considering the "roughness", i am starting to get the hang of fiberglassing, but its sti'll difficult to apply it all correctly. I dont really know what to charge, but i would need to know what style of t-tops you have. Some have a latch style that when u push the lever in it latches on and others have the rod that just pushes into the frame.

ummm, im no sucker but im wondering what you guys would think about a price.

Me to. Would also be interessed in this. Please post some pics/progress reports as it comes along. I think the main problem you'll have is making it watertight

Why not just paint the factory lexan tops?

This would be a seperate system completely, so that you wont need to paint the lexan tops and you will have a nice fiberglass t-top. Especially since it would be much more cost efficient to buy these considering a replacement set of t-tops is close to $200. Mine will be les than 1/2 of that.

Never seen a ebay lexan t-top set for more than $50

Glass seems to be the sought after kind and a NICE set barely reaches $120

Original freaks like me that dont want to paint/mod original parts usually buy cheap JY or ebay parts to change over, so the few that would buy seems kinda small

But...

You seem to have decent interest in this thread, so by all means go for it

$50 seems like a good price i am wiling to negotiate however, and i will also provide the option of sending JUST the molded fiberglass for much cheaper. Of course that means, no weatherstripping and none of the molding to latch it to your vehicle. I am willing to send JUST the fiberglass for just $25 + s/h.

I thought of doing this and insulating the underside of them. It would be nice for winter, or if you are parking your car in the sun.

I always wondered when someone would make fiberglass t-tops I don't know how no one else ever did this before, If I still had my RS with t-tops I would definently get a set
