Its design is to draw in more air to help keep engine components cool and help with combustion.

Well a cooler engine runs more efficiently, plus the hood look awsome. As far as performance, I dont know if it can actually be measured, but a fiberglass cowl is lighter than a steel hood.

a cowl hood is designed to draw from a low pressure buildup at the base of the windshield on most if not all cars. air will actually flow into the cowl and onto the engine. i assume it could also help vent heat when standing still.

removes 40 pounds off the front of the car and help vent heat/suck in colder air.

Exactly what xpendable siad. Lets out hot air while letting cool air in. And yes when the temp is just right or in the rain that hot air coming out likes to make fog on the bottom of your windhield lol. Had that problem too on my bird

In theory? Everything these guys said. In reality? Not much. Underhood temps might drop a couple degrees, but nothing you'll notice at the dragstrip or autocross. The lighter weight may translate into some minor handling benefits, but probably not much if that's the only weight saving you've done.

Now aluminum heads & a fiberglass cowl combined will save you nearly 100lbs, which is a heck of a good weight savings off the front of any car.

Lets not forget about underhood clearance as a major benefit.

i hate anything bigger then a 2", anything larger then a 2" is just obnoxious to me. yea, they may perform better then my 2", funtion wise. I'm also 5'8" or so, and when im sitting in those seats, that you just sink into, like your in a cockpit, and with the long front end of these cars, i can barely see over the thing. if i had a 4", id need to sit on a phone book or 2 lol. also, anything larger then 2" is not street legal. i beleive it varies state to state, so youd have to check into that and keep that in mind.

oh boy.. Let me try to set some of this info straight.... The real idea of a cowl hood is yes to draw in air from the base of the windsheild.

If you seal your air cleaner to the hood so your carb is only sucking in the outside air you will get a pretty good HP gain...

Air inlet temp is worth 1% power for every 10*

Do the math with me here... say it's 80* outside... 170* under the hood.. If you seal carb off so your only useing that 80* air thats a 90* drop in inlet temp..

Thats 9% gain in HP.. 300 HP mill now you got 327 hp so you picked up 27 HP.

Then theres the weight factor.. The weight savings aint alot but every little bit helps..

My stock camaro steel hood with hardware weighs 67 lbs

My harwood 4" cowl bolt on glass hood weighs 51 lbs and thats with 2 auto meter gauges placed in the cowl opening.

100 lbs of weight = 0.10 seconds in the 1/4 mile

Corrrrrrrect, Nightrider. In the first gen camaros, at least the Z's, sealed air cleaners to the cowls were used and the cowl opening had a door that worked off a solenoid that was operated at WOT to open the door. I do not know why they quit using them, but this is the system I am eventually going to implement. The aesthetics are also a real plus.

Hot92rs... Yep the 1st gen z28's was like that with the sealed to cowl breather/scoop, so was the 70/71 chevelle SS, a few of the corvettes, etc etc... Even the nascar race cars uses the same set up with an "air box" thats ducted to the car's cowl.

It's a very good idea and design thats simply, works, and has been proven many times over. (and maybe thats why GM stopped doing it.. We all know how they don't like to make stuff that works and is simple lol)

A cowl hood with a sealed air pan is usally worth 1-3mph at the drags on average. If you seal it the entire width of the scoop all the way to the wiper cowl hot air probably wont fog your window.

so these cowls perform way better than the ss hoods{ when functal} sry for bringing up the ss hood but since the cowl works....~idea~ has anyone made a cowl hood with like an ss hood on top? like so you have the cowl and on the front of it you have the ss scoop? ~ ok any one got pics from like the driver seat of there cowl hood ?
