Tint Removal
Are there any quick and easy methods for removing aftermarket tint from side windows and the rear hatch on our cars? I'd rather do it myself than pay someone if it isn't too much of a nightmare.
Thanks for your help.

use a razor blade on the end to get it started, and it might stay together while pulling the whole thing off, pull with each hand alternately is the best way i can describe it. be VERY careful not to pull of any defroster lines on the rear. 3M makes a really good adhesive remover to get the remnants off

Someone on my camaro put that cheap tint from Pep Boys I think and I took it off. Well when I took it off it looks like it left like a big black mark from where it was, like in the color of the tint. What can I do to get it off.

I was told to use a hot air gun or maybe a hairdryer got get it off. I was told by my stereo shop they would it for $30.00. So far I haven't had time to do it.

Yeah when I first bought my car it had some cheap tint on the back window that had turned purple. It was probably the worst tint job I had ever seen. It didn't even cover the whole window. Luckily I was able to peel it off pretty easily. There's still a little bit of glue residue around the edges, though. I'll give that 3M stuff a try when I get a chance.

its probably 2 layers. my previous post was with my experience on the side windows of my beater. i tried the rear window tonight, its 2 layers, and didnt want to peel off. i used a razor blade to start it, and then cleaned off the glue on the little spot with the 3M stuff, and it started the peel another spot off itself, so im gonna get a spray bottle tomorrow and try it on a bigger scale. btw, you can get that stuff at o'reillys and napa, its a white can with red letter, "3M General Adhesive Remover"

I have removed a tint job on my previous thirdgen, did it in the following way; Sprayed the entire area with ammonia in a spray bottle, covered the inside up with a plastic bag, taped around the edges to seal, and let it bake in the sun for about an hour. Then, while keeping the film constantly moist with the spray bottle, i peeled it off. The ammonia will dissolve the glue through the film. but the glue dries very fast if you do not keep it constantly moist.
smells rather bad, but works very well. getting the film off without the use of ammonia was next to impossible.

Well, I just found a place in a neighboring town that will remove all my tint for $75...so that sounds like the most reasonable option.

I just did it on a jetta i have. The best thing is to leave it in the sun. Heat is your friend. Throw on some GILA window film remover and use many razorblades. It only cost me about 5 bucks to do the whole car. The only hard part was doing the rear window because of the defroster lines. the whole project probibally took me a couple of hours. of course, knowing your rear defroster will work after might be worth the 75$.

that's what the "professionals" on one of those car shows on TV recommended. Thread
