Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

Little problem with my driver side power window. I realize this is fairly common on our cars.

My driver side window, after not using the car for a while, seems to go up/down like pretty normal, though a bit slower than the passenger side. However, if I keep rolling it up/down enough, it will eventually stop going completely and I will have to wait 30 seconds or so until it will move again, and even then it will just budge a couple of inches, then lock again.

My questions:
1) What, specifically, is the cause of this failure (and thus, what part do I need to replace) and where should I buy it from?
2) What is involved in doing this, and do you think I can tackle it myself? I am no expert on body stuff at all.

Thanks.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

I have this same problem on my 87 Z28. Except its both windows move pretty slow. I was told the soleniod(motor) for the power windows are just getting old and worn out. Im not sure if its true or not but it sounds legit. I suggest to have the motors replaced or refurbished. Also check to see if you battery is having enough output to run everything.

Entirely legit. The innards are worn out and what's happening is their drawing more current to do the same job, but that causes the internal breaker to overheat and stop the current until it cools off sufficiently. Replace the window motors and lube EVERYTHING that moves with white lithium grease.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

So should I just replace the window motor? Or do I need to replace other random electronics? And how would I do this? Thanks

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

I'd replace the window motor. It would probably be a headache to replace the internal components trying to find the culprit. Theres a link in the tech articles to a site that has diagrams and pictures. http://www.p71interceptor.com/thirdgen/powerwindows/ It's used to put power windows into a manual window car but the basic principles apply. Take the door panel off, find the rivets holding the motor in, get something to hold the gears so the spring doesn't let the mechanism unspring and destroy something, reverse for installation.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

There's also a fix somewhere on this site
having to do with making them roll up and down faster than they do. Something to do with the motor wiring.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

definately the motor and definately a paint in the ***. one of the few things i pay someone else to do because it's very frustrating for me.

motors should be 30-40 and roughly 100 or so for labor or however long it takes you. you'll need to drill out the rivets unless it's been previously replaced and the person mounted it rivetless. you'll then need to re rivet the unit or use another fixture to attach it. there is nothing else electrical in the door for this.

our window glass is heavy... end of story. pita, good luck.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

I got the same problem on my 91 Firebird, I took the panels of and it looks like replacing window motor is a major PITA... my repair guide suggested I seek professional help... (i have a 92 part car with working window motors...)
Should I really go to a mechanic or does some one have good detailed instructions on how to do it yourself? Jungle Man any luck?

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

It's not as hard as it looks. I took my car somewhere and they really screwed my door up. They cut holes in the door, big holes, and one was where my cup holder screwed into. Look at a diagram of where the rivets are, there is a page on this site that shows them. Unplug the motor first, then drill the rivets out. If you go to AZ or Discount, motors are about $65. If you go to a GM Dealer they run about $190 if I can remember correctly. I'm not sure how long AZ or Discount motors will last but i've had mine for about a year and it's still going up and down fine. This is my second Auto Zone window motor as my first one went out when I was rolling my window up and some dumb chit decided to try and push my window down to keep from going up. My drivers side window is doing the same thing right now but i'm going to go with the GM Motors because they last 15 years.

Ya, it's the motor that's burning out. My buddy's Blazer has the same problem with one of his windows.

Re: Drivers side window moving slowly/locking up...

I did this last year on my car. Both sides. It definitely isn't the easiest thing to do but iv had far worse window regulators and or Windows iv done. Hardest part was drilling out the rivets. The motors I got (wanna day from o'riellys ) came with bolts and nuts to replace rivets. Well worth it! Windows go up and down alot faster. Also I use to have to open the doors and finish rolling them up so the wouldn't leak. Now they roll all the way up.
