Need help with hatch pulldown repair

My hatch pulldown unit was not working was constantly running without shutting off so I ordered the plastic gear nut from TDS. I didnt see a gear nut anywhere on the outside of the motor and it didnt come with instructions so I thought that it would be inside the metal motor housing so I took it off.

I was having problems so I went to TDS site to see if they had anything on it on the site and I found some instructions and the instructions say not to remove the metal housing part

So now I need to know if there is a way I can put it back on or do I need a new one? There are 2 coppers leads coming from it with little metal ends on it and I do not know where they go to try to put it back together. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My guess you removed the 3 mounting bolts to car body. No big deal it only goes back on the same way. Now that it is off follow the TDS instructions and you can not go wrong. I would order the nylon guides because the stock ones are probably broken.

Just take everything apart and see how it is assemblied and again follow the instructions. Note the amount of turns on the gear nut It is imporant. Good luck.

Re: Need help with hatch pulldown repair

You removed the motor itself. The copper wires have small "block" looking pieces - they are the brushes - they have to go on either side of the copper wheel inside the motor assembly. At this point you'll have to take the yellow plastic piece off the hatch assembly, and work it back into the motor you removed, getting those brushes back out around the copper wheel inside. The brushes are spring loaded inside the yellow plastic piece. Remove the single phillips screw holding the black plastic to the white plastic, then you can remove the yellow plastic from the white plastic, then insert the yellow plastic back into the metal motor assy. with brushes correct around copper wheel, then, carefully get it all back together. It takes a steady hand, an exacto blade to pull back on the spring loaded brushes with, and alot of patience.

good luck. I gave up on my friends. Now his is bolted solid like GM should have designed it in the first place with out the plastic housing that breaks when someone shuts the hatch hard....

Good instructions for taking the motor apart, which you should not do in the first place.

What is so hard about repairing the Hach release??? There are only three major items that require replacement in most cases...nylon guides, gear nut and the motor assembly. TDS instruction are very good and if you are anywhere being mechanically inclined its a job I would rate as a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Re: Need help with hatch pulldown repair

Best way to get those brushes back in there is to use a paper clip of something similar to hold them in while you drop the motor back in. simple.

Re: Need help with hatch pulldown repair

I tried the paperclips and it didnt work. Just in case anyone in the future has this problem the way I got them back in was I removed the main part of the motor from the housing it pulls right out is just a little hard cause its held in by a really strong magnet. I then put the main part of the motor into the body of the unit so the brushings wouldnt pop out then put the cover back on over top of it.

My pulldown unit housing was also broken where the 3 bolts are but I glued it back together. It was also cracked in one of the bolt holes where the latch assembly is so it looks like I will be buying a new body in the near future, but the unit does work for now.

For everyones info that pull down motor is one assembly. if the plastic case is broken you need the whole assembly. That internal motor dose not come out.

What do you mean? I got the motor out and everything I had it completely dissassembeled and put it back together again. And you can just buy a new plastic casing from Top Down Solutions.

Re: Need help with hatch pulldown repair

Are you talking about the metal case the actual motor is closed in or the plastic housing? If just your housing is messed up you can buy the plastic housing and transfer all the guts into it.

For your info there were two styles of motor. The one one on his car has the motor slipping into a slot molded into the clear plastic motor housing. Call this the old style motor. GM replaced this with a new style motor that has the motor and clear plastic motor housing assembled as an integral unit. There are some minor improvements in doing this, such as a bronze bushing which supports the end of the worm drive shaft. There is also a big disadvantage to this new style motor. With the old style motor and housing, if the motor housing cracked you could easily replace JUST that housing. The new style motor doesn't have this provision. If your motor housing is broken on the new style motor, yet the motor is perfectly fine, you still have to chuck the motor and replace the entire assembly with a new motor (for more coin from your pocket).

Reading this post tells me I need to update the label of the gear nut (which is all subliminal purchased). I'll include a blurb about suggesting that the customer download the instructions for the 101170 guides from my site. If he'd purchased the guides he'd have had the instructions that others have mentioned in this thread. You can also look at the Tech Article I wrote on TGO which is essentially the same instructions. It is cost prohibitive to print and include the instructions with just a single item such as the gear nut. It will take a while to transition to a new label since I have roughly 80 gear nuts packaged and in stock with the current label.

If you can't reassemble the motor you can get another from a Pick-a-Part yard. I also sell used old style motors on TDS. Sorry for any inconvenience.
