Hey guys,
I am attempting to remove the plastic front inner wheel wells, but am unsure how to pull off/out the plastic retaining clips that hold it in. In the manual they are called wheelhouse panel-to-fender retainers.
Any one know how to get these clips off without destroying them?
Also I tried to find the part number for these clips, but couldn't. Anyone have the part #, or know if these clips are still available from GM or??
-TIA

Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
if you have thin wire cutter type pliers you can pull out the center pin enough to remove them, just don't squeeze too hard or you'll cut the head off.
I usually use use a small prybar to loosen the pin and they come off as an assembly after that, either method works.
They should be available from GM but I'm not for sure since I buy all mine from Lowe's. They aren't inexpensive though at almost $2 a piece
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
you're better off cutting them off and getting new ones. They are a PITA to get out and actually keep to reuse. I tried pulling out the inner fender plastic from a Firebird at a junkyard and the clips were in good. I basically bent up the actual fender just trying to pull the clips out... would hate to do that on my actual car.
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
yeah make sure u hold the fenderlip in place while pulling the fasteners out. u can get a whole box of them on the shelf at autozone for a few bucks. if necessary, cut them to get them out (side cuts)
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
yeah they sell black ones. just take an old one with u a match it up. they are very common fasteners used on all makes and models so they are easy to find and cheap. ive heard people call them "christmass tree fasteners/pins" but i dont know if thats the proper term. lol id hate to go up to someone and say that and they be like "wtf are u talking about?"
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
Well, I went to a few places this morning, and most places sell generic clips that fit the application, but they are all either too small or too big. On Monday I will call the dealer to see what's still around, but if they don't carry them any more, I will go with the smaller generic ones.
Thanks for the info guys.

Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
I've removed mine many times. I spray them with some WD-40, then pry them out with two small flat-bladded screw drivers (stick the blades under the slots on the head of the push pin).
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
Sorry for necro-posting, but I was searching for info on the black pins that hold the inner fender skirt in place, and this was about as new a thread as I could find in this forum.
I may need to pull the plastic fender skirt on the passenger side so I can weld a new battery tray into place. The skirt buts up against the opposite side of the sheet metal where I may be welding.
Anyhow, I looked at the black plastic pins that secure the plastic skirt in the fenderwell, and I'm seeing pins that look like these fasteners, sold on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/330587903533
Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
IMHO, the first set of pins you describe are fine only when new. Once the tail is deformed through use, pulling the pin out only weakens the pin further. The second pin - push pin design can be reused successfully multiple times if you don't distort the pin head. I've reused them a few time with no issue.

Re: inner fender well retaining clips. (wheelhouse)
Ive "re-used" mine several dozen times.Just pull them out part way, so you dont loose the center.
I like the type used on some motorcycles, where you just push the center in & it releases the pin
