Holy T-top

So I was driving down the road today with windows down and the t-tops where in when the biggest gust of wind blew my driver side t-top out of my car. That things sailed threw the air like a freaken kite for about fourty feet till it smashed into the road. Now its in about four pieces and duct taped in until i can get a new one monday. What a day.

Re: Holy T-top

Wow, it only broke into 4 pieces? Most t-tops I've heard shatter in thousands. Lexan? Good luck on finding a replacement...

Re: Holy T-top

Over on ls1tech I saw a thread about people's t-tops flying off. Theirs flew off because they didn't latch them Anyways, everyone said that they flew way up in the air, sound like it'd be cool to see, but that sucks. hopefully you won't have any problems finding a new one.

Honestly, I've halfway considered getting a junk t-top from the boneyard and doing this on a back road just to see how far it flies...

Re: Holy T-top

Happened to me on a highway going 70. Forgot to latch both tops, and the right one ripped right off. Let me tell you, it sounds like a helicopter landing on your car. By the grace of god, rush hour, there was no one behind me, and I probably could have killed someone the way the thing flew backwards. I have no idea where it landed, but the next day it rained as I went to the junkyard to find a new one, and I got pretty wet to say the least heh.

Re: Holy T-top

This is also happened to me going around a corner about 40....I'm positive it was latched...i had just dropped off my buddy and he said he didn't touch it, I still don't believe him. Mine shattered in a 1000 pieces right in front of a police station....It was like 20 out that night, it was a cold ride home to say the least...And it hit my new paint(aug06) A couple little dings that now have to be touched up. At least yours didn't hit the car.

Re: Holy T-top

Yeah I got lucky it didnt hit my car or anybody elses. Now I make sure the t-tops are locked after i put them back in. dont want to pay for anymore or chance possibly killing some one with a flying t-top.

Will do. I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for the dirty, nasty, scratched one nobody wants.

What kind of latches do the rest of you guys have. I have the kind that is a "swing latch". You have to swing out the handle (full 90 degrees) before the t-top can be lifted, so I'd notice if it was loose...

Re: Holy T-top

My friends corvette top did that a few months ago. Whole damn thing flew off on the freeway. It was raining and he had an hour long drive without a top lol. Mustve been a bitch.

It was latched hes sure of it, but that top rattles a lot so maybe he got just enough flex to allow it to come off.

Re: Holy T-top

The t-tops i bought out of the junkyard are from a firebird and they have the same latch type but the dont seem to seal up as tight as the old ones so it sound like i have the window cracked all the time. Is there anyway to adjust how tight the fit?

Re: Holy T-top

The two female latches on the car can be adjusted to pull the top up/down as needed. Once you pull the trim panel off, I believe that each is held on with a pair of 7mm screws.

Sadly I had a similar problem. Scary as hell, forgot to latch drivers side, thought a plane was landing on roof, didnt realize what it was till it was too late.

noone got hurt, I didnt even bother going back to see what was left as I was on the thruway.

Re: Holy T-top

yeah same thing happend to me couple weeks ago i was going 50, next thing i know that top got sucked off like a roof in a tornado. i guess i didnt latch it all the way. yeah thats the only good thing about the lexan it doesnt shatter. got some glass ones yesterday, but they dont fit as well i think it must be because they dont have that lip that the lexan ones have
