hatch pull down
hatch pull down
I just got my first tast of the Fbody in a 89 pontiac firebird I picked up. The rear hatch does not stay shut, the latch seems to be broken. This is the pulldown type. Another issue is that the key does not work for the latch. I am looking for a cheap quick fix that will allow me to lock the rear hatch and unlock it. I also noticed mulitiple wire taped together and others just dangling, aka. hack job.
Should I replace the pulldown? Put in a none electric latch? What about the lock portion?
Please guide me in the right direction with what to do, also is there a wiring diagram available for the pulldown?
Thanks for your help.

Re: hatch pull down
No. The entire wiring for the pull-down unit is included with the striker-sensing switch. GM discontinued the switch. I have NOS striker-sensing switches in stock and available on my web site.

Re: hatch pull down
Ok, now I have a new issue, lol. Found out there was not a fuse under the dash to control the pull down, and this was in good reason beacues I soon as I put the fuse in, the pull down went up, grabbed the hatch and pulled it down. Key doesn't work, and no pop release.
So the wiring works, is there a way to release this? Thanks guys

Re: hatch pull down
The followint info is for the 1986 to early 1991 style hatch pull down motor: It is easier if you've already removed the hatch surround trim panle. If not then remove the hatch light and look for the black 10mm screw. That screw is holding either the solenoid hatch release or manual hatch release to the latch assy. You'll need to remove that screw and the manual or solenoid hatch release. Once it's off you'll see a square hole. There is a lever with a tang that is bent toward you. Push that tang to rotate the lever counter-clockwise. It will release the latch.
