repairing a leaky trunk with roofing tar

okay guys, this post is actually in regards to my 70 LeMans, but the vehicle type doesn't matter. the LeMans has a rusted out trunk that leaks exhaust into the cabin. i don't have the money to have the body work done, so my buddy suggested roofing tar and screen to sort of patch it up until real work can be done. all i care about is eliminating exhaust fumes and any other petro odor that will cause my head to ache when i drive it.

if anyone here has tried this, can you tell me if the roofing tar will just smell up the car even worse? or will it eventually dry and not smell? thanks.

Re: repairing a leaky trunk with roofing tar

use fiberglass filler instead,

tar is a bad idea, too messy and not a god fix at all

wirebrush and such away all the loose rust and junk real good first

good luck
