Help with my wing
Help with my wing
Ok heres the deal, this is a replacement aero from Dennis Mecham. It doesn't fit worth a you know what. Now I got the holes to line up, but the front pointy fins arent right and the stress and pressure moving them up when I shut it has cracked part of the seam. You can see the crack in pics below, and also below is a link to a video showing how it shuts, sorry youtube decreases the quality. How can I get this thing to fit good enough so it wont crack again, and how to fix the crack. Please any help you can give would be great, thank you.

ew, I dont suppose exchanging that is an option?
The trouble with that is, that even if you should fill that hole with fiberglass or something, you're still stressing the whole thing.. whos to say its not going to keep cracking, especially with that hitting the quarter. You'd have to sand the **** out of that to make it flush.

I don't have a bird but for $600 I would be claiming a refund or exchange. That is just too much money for anything to crack.

I can't believe you'd pay $600.00 for that!!! It looks like a Foxbody mustang wing! Eeeew.

Well I have contacted Mecham and we're trying to get it worked out. Yes the wing was $449 + shipping, but there's no other like it, and I love the way it looks. I think it flows perfectly with my gfx, well to each their own. I'll keep you all posted. But still if you have anything to add, feel free.

I think it's a great looking spoiler too! If you couldn't get that replaced, you'd want to shave the ends (where I assume it's hitting your quarter panels) or shim the center and do what is called a scarf repair on the cracks. That involves sanding a broad "v" into the crack and then laying progressively larger layers of fiberglass mat or cloth soaked with resin into the "v". You can get all that stuff at www.fibreglast.com or www.uscomposites.com. Once the resin is cured, you sand with a sanding block using an "x" pattern and prime. Or, if there is a body shop supply in your area, you can ask them for guidance as they usually have some pretty good fillers etc. (better than Bondo). It takes some practice, but if you have time and the desire, it's a worthwhile skill to learn.
