Wing Seperation Anxiety Syndrome

I have suffered this terrible burden of W-SAS since I got my 1983 Trans Am. I am scared to look in the mirrors or go through an auto car wash, and fear even touching it when opening the hatch.

My rear wing has seperated somehow. Seems the factory glued the top and bottom of the wing together and the glue has failed. I first contracted this disorder while going through the auto car wash for the first time in her. I was excited to get her washed up and my favorite part was coming at the end where the massive blowers make you feel like your going 300mph, as I approached the holy ground, suddenly I heard a terrible terrible terrible sound akin to a leather belt being held and snapped several hundred times per minute, and I stare agape in the mirror as my rear wing is committing suicide. For almost a minute I was in pure hell just waiting for her wing to come sailing through the hatch or worse, through the next cars windshield. Then the calm came over me as the tide of terror ceased, and I realized that she made it through the storm, and just a bit worse for wear, she was ok, but She's been hurt and needs my attention.

Ok enough of the drama crap, how the hell did my wing seperate, and how do I fix it? I tried using hot glue(the red glitter kind if you care to know...lol), but unfortunately the wing is black so I'm sure you can assume well how that went. Is there a way to get the rest of the glue holding it to release so I can clean it up and glue it back together the right way?

Thanks,

Frank

Re: Wing Seperation Anxiety Syndrome

maybe some auto strength double sided tape could work. or you could keep trying glittery hot glue.

The right way is get another wing, and paint it. And don't take a car through the car wash. Ever.

Fiberglass wing? It sounds like, the sudden drop in temperature, between the hot water, and cooler drying air, caused that to happen. Never seen that happen before.

Not taking her through the car wash wasnt an option. When I got the car I had to drive it back 300 miles from OH and it was snowing and with the salt on the roads, I had to get it rinsed off. The auto wash's do a great job cause they have undercarriage wash's.

I think I am going to pull the wing off my 90 Bird and put that on her. Its white anyhow so it matchs better. The black wing with white paint was a bit wierd anyway.

Re: Wing Seperation Anxiety Syndrome

when i bought my car in december, i had the same problem, i brought it home. Luckily we had +3 degrees celicius (freezing is 0 degrees C) so i had just enough warmth to wash. I jacked up the rear as high as my jack would go, got out my hose, and sprayed it with water for a good 20 mins. Got all the little nooks and crannies, and kept rinsing till i didnt see salt wash out anymore. Worked well.

Re: Wing Seperation Anxiety Syndrome

the stock spoilers on an 83 trans am are extremely common and cheap. hit some junkyards or the classifieds and find one locally. I'd expect to pay about $15.
