Headlight motor question
Headlight motor question
Hi I have a question about the difference in the motors between say a 86 firebird and a 90 firebird. I personally have a 90 but I bought a headlight and headlight motor out of a 86 now I know that the headlight and bracket will all fit, and I also know that the 86 has a three wire motor and my car has a two wire motor. I tested my motor and the gray with the black strip is the hot and the green is the ground. What are the colors of the other wires coming on my new motor and what is the third wire for? I am thinking I will just cut off the two wire connection from mine original motor and splice it onto the new motor for the power and ground, I am just curious what that third wire is for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Kenny

Re: Headlight motor question
I've seen a few cars in the junkyard that have been Jerry-Rigged as you describe. My 88 Formula had a 3-wire motor swapped for one of the 2-wire motors. I can tell you the two systems are not compatible at all. It simply won't work. The three wire motor can't be made to work in place of the two wire unless you comletely re-wired the car. I don't know why you'd want to go back to the older inferior headlight motors though.

Re: Headlight motor question
Well, That may be true. However, wouldn't you want the bad news up front before you wasted your time?
