Hey everyone, question. Painting my whole car this week. After studying my panels, I've noticed that about 50% of the inside front fender surfaces was rust, much worse than the outside body. So the panel is now bare metal,(till tomorrow morning) I live in a very salty area, very bad for cars, SO... considering no one sees the inside of the fenders, I'm wondering if I should simply put a couple coats of tremclad. Would priming the inside be necessary? Will it last?

por 15 is another option for the innerfenders. it bonds with rust.

Depends what kind of tremclad. Over about 5 years, i know the paint is very tough, it only dulls out. But ive never stripped it to see the metal underneath.
Most paints are porous so they let moisture in. A body guy told me, the only two things that seal, are sealer on primer beforepaint, and clear coat.
But ive had good experience with tremclad, like i said only 5 years to compare, but its a very tough paint.

Yeah, actually I saw that stuff on the shelves today. I was considering it for the parts I could simply not sand out. I'm not equipped for sandblasting. How reliable is that stuff? It's made to bond with rust, then paint over it? It just doesn't sound right to me. I could see the rust resurface 2 yrs down the road.Originally Posted by Bobby_80s

POR-15 is what you want to go with. I did the whole underside of my car with it. My bumper on my truck was rusted really bad, so I painted it with por-15 its been a good while now and there are no signs of rust coming through. A bit expensive, but its amazing. A little goes a long way with this stuff. Follow the directions and you will be fine.

i agree completely. I have a lot of experience with it on many applications and if you follow the directions to a "T" it will work very well and is far tougher then Tremclad. Do all 3 stages and it will not dissapoint.Originally Posted by GeeJenn91RSV8

Rust free sheet metal and real auto body paint is the only right way to do it. Spray can or brush on rust paint may or may not hold up forever.
