Quick rust fix anyone?
So I was doing an oil change today - the first one I've ever done to this car. I noticed that some moron had jacked it up in the wrong place - really more like 4 wrong places - and where the metal was all bent in there is some rust developing. Also just under the seats where there is some sort of drain plug - that's rusting pretty badly. Everything else that has rust can be replaced. There's not alot of rust on this car at all - my 02 ford has more. So what car I do about this that's cheap and fast? At wal-mart they have a rustoleum "spray for rusty surfaces" which is rust colored. Claims it stops rust. There is also a spray can of rust remover - whatever that is. Or should I just hit it with 15 coats of primer and call it a day? Ignore it?
Re: Quick rust fix anyone?
15 coats of rattle can primer will make it worse............will hold moisture.
If its rusting by the drain plug in the rear floor pan, sounds like some sort of leak, t-tops? Need to look into that.
U can coat it with something like POR-15 or "rust bullett" to try to slow it down.
U can ignore it too..........but it ain't gonna stop.

you could use a wire wheel, or just a regular wire brush if you dont have any power tools. Then you would want to coat it with some kind of rust neutrilizer or converter. the coating doesnt have to be the "POR15" you can get spray cans and small bottles of neutrilizers at auto-motive stores that will do exactly the same thing. the second option would be to grind the rust off completely with an angle grider and and just use a self etching primer along with a good quality ruberized undercoating. i know 3M makes some good ruber coating. hope that helps.

Thanks guys - I got some stuff rom the parts store that says it drives out moisture anf kills rust. Funny thing is, it's rust colored. lol - anyhoo - I'll drive out moisture and hit it with some primaer and then some paint. I'll look into undercoatings asap. I just want to do a few more mods before I get to that. like 4th gen interior peices and headers.

drives out moisture? i dont know about that, sounds a little strange to me but we will see in about 10 years how it works. lol just keep in mind that rust will form and spread as long as it has oxygen and water. to really stop the rust you should romove as much as possible before you use the rust killer, then cover it to seal out any moisture and air that could get to it.

Yep, the only real way to get rid of the rust or prevent it from getting worse is to remove it all and repair the spots with new metal or a bondo type product and then to seal it with a por 15 or primer. I just got finished removing the rust from my wheel wells, had to sand all the rust away (there is always more than it first seems) and fill in the holes and smooth everything out then hit it with some primer.

Ohio, there is no fast and easy way to get rid of rust. It takes time and a small investment to clean it up properly. POR 15 makes a good product and you can pick and choose how much you want to buy. The important thing about it is to follow the directions exactly as they are written. I have had very good luck with their products(the POR products I used on my `74 El Camino 15 years ago are still holding up well.) The complaints I have heard about the POR products are from people who do not follow directions and miss steps. As an old speed shop owner told me in 1969, "If all else fails, follow the directions!" Still true today.

have had nothing but good luck with por15 as well, just follow the directions as everyone else has stated.
one of these days i'm gonna hit the floorboards, inside and out, with some por grey.

I got mine from a autobody supply store. Its expensive, sounds like a pint would be good for you. A little goes a long way.
