Back in the game, New to restoration

my 84 TA was purchased when i was 16, I am now 32 it has been sitting in my parents garage since 1999. Now that I have a shop, a lift, and room, I am ready for my restoration. THe body is excellent, This car was fitted with a camaro convertible top so it is truly unique.

I have some general engine restoration questions. First of all I have the hood scoop, and what is that little motor thing thiat goes into the airfilter from the hood, how is it activated, and how can I test it?

I would like to strip down the motor, install new valve seals dress it up, paint it, etc... What are you recommendations for degreasing and Painting?

and where in the heck can I find those plastic caps that go in the center of the wheel, and how can I keep them on?

I am pretty excited to have found this site, and look forward to contributing!

Re: Back in the game, New to restoration

It's supposed to be a vaccuum operated hood scoop, not possitive on operation, assuming it's something along the lines of when you floor it that it opens up for more air, i've got the non-functional 88 formula hood , anyways thats why it's hooked up to the air filter, i'll leave it to someone else to fill in the blanks there.

degreaser and brush always works

at the bottom on this page you'll see a pull down menu saying "forum jump". Go down to the bottom of the list, and you'll see "exterior parts wanted". Start a new thread in there being as descriptive as possible in what you want, the year, make, and model car you have, and what wheels the car has (include a picture for what it aplies if you can). That should get you the parts you need. Give or take every other day if noone answers post a reply in your thread, you can leave it blank, some put bump, what ever you want, but doing this will move your thread to the top so people can see it when they go into that forum instead of being at the bottom of the page. Good luck and welcome to TGO!

prooooobably a good idea, just check the fluids, don't wanna move sludge through the motor to clog things and end up causing damage you don't need to replace later!

Re: Back in the game, New to restoration

thanks jay_d, Before i put it in storage it was smoking like a **** for the first few minutes when started up. A mechanic told me valve seals was the culprit. Is it possible to sihpon out the bad gas or is a gas tank removal and cleaning the actual solution? I need to get it running for about 30 seconds to drive it on the car hauler to move it to my shop.

thanks

Re: Back in the game, New to restoration

try and see if you can get your siphon to drag the bottom of the tank, see how what comes out looks...smell it, see if it smells really bad, because if you don't mind cleaning/replacing the injectors, spark plugs, ect, and plan on doing a complete rebuild on the motor and it's other parts, you may just want to take a look at the gas and the motor oil just to get it running for that 30 seconds.

Come-along is only $20 and some chain, proves very useful in the future
