Starting Problem

Hey im kinda new here but i got a serious problem. I got a '89 Camaro RS with the 2.8 MPFI on it and for some reason now it wont start! It sat for about eight months due to a broken brake line. I went to start it (after charging the battery) and it cranked like usual but it just wouldnt start. I pumped the gas on teh second try, sounded alittle better but still didnt start. Third try i had the gas to the floor and it sounded better, ALMOST started then nothing. I blame the used fuel pump Goodyear put in but when i turn the key ON i hear it buzzing. My friend said it might be the spark but, im not too sure, got any suggestions? (probably gonna try eather in the TB)

Re: Starting Problem

well if it runs on ether, then you would pretty much know that its the fuel pump.....i dont know about the spark plugs cuz it would most likely still run, just run like crap if it was the plugs....is everything hooked up? i.e. the spark plug cables and such? that could be a reason......

Re: Starting Problem

ya im pretty sure every thing is hooked up, but i don't think its the spark, if it is i might not be getting enought. Its a 89 and the wires were replaced in 98 and hasnt had a PROPER tune up since 99.

My one buddy said that it might be the relay, he told me to rewire the fuelpump to a switch on my dashboard, if everything else fails i may do that, but i would rather not, any suggestions anybody?

Re: Starting Problem

do what racer x said, have someone inside and crank it and you spray ether into the throttle body, if it fires, its most likely the fuel pump.

Try just cranking quite a few times, may just need to prime the fuel system again since it sat for so long, have you checked the fuel in the tank?If you open the cap,and get a little wiff you should be able to tell if the gas is bad or not.(don't sniff deeply)that can mess with your brain!LOL!Also,if you here the fuel pump buzzing,it is working and highly reccomend not wiring it to a switch on the dash.Last month,I replaced a known bad fuel pump in a 87 GTA that had been sitting for over 4 years in my friends backyard. We pulled the tank, drained the nasty old gas, reinstalled it with the new pump, changed the filter, tried to start it with no success, tried again,no start.Tried again about three times and still no start. We then left the car,got some lunch, came back and tried again, car started right up!And still running like a champ! One more thing, pumping the pedal does no good on mpfi or tpi cars, thats what the electronic fuel pump is for.And just to let you know, this thread should have been placed on the electronics forum not the body forum.Good luck, hope this helps ya!

Re: Starting Problem

on the fuel rail look for a valve sorta like a valve stem with a cap on it take the cap off you can put fuel pressure gauge here or take a nail or something and press the needle down to see if any fuel is here if there isnt go back to the fuel filter and check there for fuel

Re: Starting Problem

ya i wasnt paying attention to where i was putting this, not too farmiliar but i reposted this under V6, might work. But back on subject, i was talking to an old teacher of mine while the car was on the road and it usually had alittle trouble starting and when starting had white smoke coming out of the exhaust. He said it may be the way the valves are sitting, i guess that makes sense but when i try to start it now white smoke comes out and sludge or something comes out of the exhaust (no clue wtf it is, MAY be clogging up the exhaust?). Oh well im gonna try to charge the battery then try the ether in the TB on satuday.

Re: Starting Problem

white smoke comes from water either water in the gas tank or a blown intake or head gasket is the car tring to start if you have fuel pressure i would try putting gas in the tb see it will start

Re: Starting Problem

TIMMY is right, pumping the gas petal does nothign for these cars...actually the only thing that does is if the system is flooded then you pin the petal to put it to full run....just like you do to a weedwacker you pull the string on too many times, when it starts flooding (which you would be able to smell probably if you were flooding your car) then try pinning the petal

Re: Starting Problem

i see, but Also this may be a problem. After it sat for awhile due to a brake line problem my RETARDED BROTHER put weedwacker fuel (2cycle) into the gas tank(accidentally). Not much maybe 1/8 of a gallon but may that be a problem. recently i put 2 gallons of 93 octane along with STP Fuel Filter and FI cleaner. Just throwing that out there

Re: Starting Problem

thats loading it full of crap that the motor doesnt really need....the 2 cycle fuel may cause it to hardly fire, the fuel injector cleaner is pretty much just kerosene (yes kerosene, the way it cleans the injectors is by the kerosene burning a bit longer in order to burn of any sort of gunk) and the problem with kerosene is that it isnt quite as flammable as gasoline.....i dont know if 2 gallons of gas is enough to dilute all that stuff, usually youre supposed to use the injector cleaner on a full tank in order to dilute it a bit.......

Re: Starting Problem

heres one way to think about it.....isolate the area of the problem....ether, if it starts on ether, then you dont have an ignition problem, you have a fuel delivery or just plain fuel problem with all that stuff in it, which then i woudl recommend just putting a full tank of gas in it at that point.....if it doesnt start on ether, then its time to do an electrical tune up then try the ether again

Re: Starting Problem

how much is a can of ether? Probably grab a can, and try it on saturday. If it starts then your right, fuel. Probably a clogged filter or something.

Re: Starting Problem

i cant imagine it being more than 5 dollars...i mean i kinda hope that for your sake its the electrical cuz that is a hell of a lot easier to fix than the fuel system i'd imagine
