Cant figure out whats wrong with hatch...

I got my car last summer with a very messed up hatch... well we decided to replace the hatch and the car that the hatch came from lined up great with the car... well as we took it off we took the hinges, struts, and weather stripping to see if it would make it line up on my car. With the hatch struts off the hatch is sticking out about an 1/8 inch on the driver side and about 3/8 inch on the passerger side. Also it sticks up about 1/4 inch. But last time i had shocks on my hatch it made it stick up on the passenger side of the hatch. It sticks up almost as bad as the first one. I cant get the hatch to compress down anymore its almost like its sitting on the car or bumpers but its touching nothing. I dont believe that my car has ever been hit because all inside sheet metal is flawless. So does ANYONE have ideas for me. I just really want to fix this problem because its driving me crazy... thanks. -Matt

Basically your ****ed you shouldn't have changed hatch You need to loosen the beauty bolts and loosen the hatch catch and or the pull down and adjust accordingly. It will take 2 to 3 guys but you can do it, and it will line up.

What is the difference between the old hatch and the new one? The new one is in better shape. Also the old hatch wasn't even the origional hatch... so dont you think i can get this one to line up? -Matt

my 89's hatch sticks up about 1/4" also but it is because the pull down motor, actually the gears are stripped so it does pull the hatch down.

I have the same problem with my 91 Rs. As for getting the different hatches to fit. You should be able to get it to fit. Im pretty sure it will just take some time and messing around with that motor because i dont think the hatch changed at all for any type of Camaro.

Re: Cant figure out whats wrong with hatch...

I know for a fact my car has had at least 3 different hatches on it, so I know they'll fit other cars besides the one they came on. When I got it it wasn't original, but lined up okay and I have since changed it again. Mine had shims underneath the hinges where they meet the body. I had to play with it a little, but my dad and I had it lined up in less than an hour. My car has been in several good accidents, had the left rear quarter replaced and it lines up perfectly.

Re: Cant figure out whats wrong with hatch...

you just need to adjust where the pull down motor is or where the hatch locks in should be 3 screws, lower it until so it goes down all the way, but not to far not hard to do just frustrating, did it by myself on mine
