Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

So, my neighbor backed into my 92 RS yesterday... She somehow didnt notice the bright yellow car parked on the side of the road. Well she called her insurance and they said they would pay to hav it fixed, since there was only damage to the passenger door. I went to the body shop today to get the estimate and they said they could do it, but werent sure if they could paint it to match. the car was painted by the last ownera custom yellow. the quality of the paint is the problem... there are a few runs and sags in the paint on the car. Due to all this, they wont pay for anything but the door to get replaced and painted. The guy at the shop said that it wasn't going to match the rest of the car too well and that it would be somewhat noticable. What should i do? I just want my car to be back to normal. I dont want a door that is slightly different than the rest of the car. It matched fine before the accident, so shouldnt it be fixed to match perfectly?

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with this situation?

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

It all depends on the insurance company's. Most will only pay to get the damage that has been done to the car and unless it is on your insurance yo get an option to have a spacial car insurance (something like that I got local insurance) that will pay for custom stuff that has been broken to the car. To answer your ??? I think you will have to pay to get the (custom) paint job redone but not the door.

That seems unfair tho. I shouldn't have to deal with a door that doesn't really match the rest of the car...

What's the problem? They're trying to screw you. If the body shop can't match the paint exactly, they need to spray the whole thing. That's not your fault. Tell the insurance company that you want the whole thing sprayed. That's what is going to make it look like it did before and nothing less.

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

Since these cars don't book for much...it doesn't take much to total them. If....they would have to blend the door out....then the cost of the repair is to high...and would total the car. To a point...the insurance is doing you a favor...by just staying on one panel (even though it may not match) your car is not going to total out. Insurance companies suck....

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

Yea, i was pretty pissed when it happened.. i was actually driving up the street with my brother in his car when i saw her backing out and hit my car. I pretty much jumped out of the moving car and ran up to my car. I was about to kill somebody lol...

But anyway, the insurance company will total the car if the repairs are more than the value of the car right? Well to get the door repaired, the shop quoted about $950.. KBB says a car of my year in good condition is worth about $3000. So, should it all work out? I'm not being greedy by wanting to get the whole car painted, i just want everything to match perfectly like it did before the accident. If the shop could just paint the door and have it match perfectly, i would be satisfied.

Thats what the insurance companys usually do. I wouldnt settle for anything less than how it was before and tell the insurance guy, put yourself in my position do you want to be driving around with a mismatched door becasue of something out of your control. Dont let them screw you over

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

Don't let them half *** fix it. They're supposed to pay to fix it completely.. That includes how it "looks." I had a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT that was mine for *3 days* when (this is cool) a pack of DOGS got over excited chasing a cat that ran under my car. $2,500 worth of claws and teeth imprints on the new black car. Needless to say, I made sure it was perfect when I picked it up.

To conclude that story.. My ex took the car in the divorce and totaled it a few weeks later while driving after leaving "the club."

While this is OT from the purpose of the thread ( I guess).. I don't know whose dogs. My insurance took care of it. They even took care of the deductible given my problem free track record. :-)

I had a mustang back in 90 that I tore up. The shop that fixed it spent some time mixing this and that to get the same fade that my car had. But the paint didnt have runs, sags and drips in it. If it was a perfect paint job maybe............. At least one door will be painted right!

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

i would think that a body shop should be able to color match to a point that they could blend the new color and the old color together in a way that the color difference is not noticed

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

We had the same problem on my buddies Ferrari it had the stock yellow but had a repaint or a pearl. We painted 3 parts of the car and it didn't match. The shop we buy paint from sent out a guy that used a digital photo gun to tell the color and then sold us a custom mixed paint. At that point we said screw it and painted the whole car! but it was almost perfect.

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

If I were you I would check with another body shop. My uncle has a shop and can match any color with the paint system he has. He puts a sensor on the car and the computer mixes up the color to match. He has never had a problem. Only thing may be if the clear coat is a little dull then the reshot panel may appear to be more shiny. Usually if you buff out the rest of the car it will match up better in sheen.

Only other thing you can do is fight it out with the insurance company. If you complain long and loud enough they will eventually give in. Other thing to look into is going through your insuance company and let them subrogate with your neighbor's insurance company. I have gone that route once before and it actually worked out better for me, not having to wait on the money or the repair.

Usually, they can re-paint the color on the new door, then re-clear the whole car. But that would again cost more.

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

I agree with the folks who say " don't let the insurance company screw you over"....If you don't feel "up to" arguing with an insurance adjuster, then let someone else do it for you....an older bro, a dad.....anybody who's been there before. a guy in that job would love to take advantage of your youth and get off cheap.....I'd demand that they make the car match....no matter HOW much of it needs to be repainted......and by the way....tell them you need a rental car while yours' is in the shop......it's pretty standard and I know that I would demand it......i've dealt with these situations before and i give them no slack....................good luck

Re: Need some advice, my neighbor backed into my car...

i wont cost but around 200 more dollars to wet sand the spots that need blending (back quarter and front fender) then blend into them so it will match...............make em buff the WHOLE car too.....that way the door aint really really shinny and the rest of the car dull......it really shouldnt cost any more to blend the door to the rest of the car.............insurance copanies are *******s, and so are body shops......they have you over a barrel and they know it.......id be an *** and tell em to put the runs back where they where

Haha, I wouldn't be too sure I would say that, as the body man might be an *** as well and actually put a few runs in it.

i would be happy with the runs if they were there before the accident.....if i had 4 runs in my door before the accident....id want four runs after i picked it up........oh and most of us ******* body men dont run it, we prep for base with 2k grit......that way the paint comes off from just looking at it funny...........jk jk
