Some member have asked me questions of how the shocks are installed on the Hawks notchback so here they are.

Some modifications where done to the latch as seen in the pictures. The shocks mount directly into the bolts supplied on the notchback (something I really dont like much, bolts moves!!) And also I had the mounting holes enlarged in order to have notchback nicely between the lines of the rear end. The holes where then filled with epoxy and sanded.

One important thing, stock shocks are to powerfull!!! The much lighter notchback 45lbs vs the 135lbs stock rear window plus T/A aero spoiler, need weaker shocks or some old shocks. What I did is that I traded my almost new rear shocks for some old ones from a friend of mine and voila!! He ended having his hatch opning again and mine opened nice and easy instead of launching like a rocket.

Curious if the notch back wil work on the camaro rear?

 

it will fit 82-92

 

im thinking about getting the notchback. but it might get in the way of instlling roll cage.
im going to install an 8-point cage. wil it fit?
or would i have to modify afew things and have the bars stick out. kinda like the Nascar Trucks?

if you have to do that. and you did a good job in modifying the notchback. would it look terrible on the camaro?

 

you could just modify the back bars you would go over the top sailpanel and then drop the bars to the rare behind the seats.

you would not want to go throw hatch, it would not open

 

yeah thats what i was thinking.
and the only way i found out if i had the bars going threw the notchback would be to cut out 2 slots and have to get a 3 small windows and then have to figure out a way so it seals proper. to much of a hassle for me. i just looked on the internet acturally and i found some of the rear bars that are bent and curved and everything. can you still store your t-tops in the rear with the notch back?

last qustion. would it be lighter then the rear hatch with a lexan window? or roughly the same? im doing a big wight reduction on my car.

 

there is still room for the t-top with the factory notchback (the one i have) with the roll bar

i have seen the lexan window once on this site and it was thick so i can answer that question

 

oh ok. im making a strip car with very minimal street use and it will be stored indoors. im just trying to figure out my options.

can you get me a pic of where the shocks actually mount to the car?

thats my issue.. i can get it mounted to the notchback itself.. but it hits the lid.... it seams from a pic i have seen before.. that the shocksis mounted almost 2 inches lower then the factory glass window ones..

if you could get me a pic.. see if you can pull that plastic cover off ..(if your not affraid... so i could see the bracket .. so i know what i have to make..

I thought for the Hawks notchback it mounted in the stock location and the oem mounts a few inches below...

If Hawks or anyone sells the mounts to mount 2 inches below, I would like a set for my oem nothcback...

Here are some pics of the notchback with rollcage from another member, and yes there is room for the t-tops, about 6-7 inches. Heck, I will measure it right now.

 

I AM SO GLAD I STARTED THIS THREAD!!!! When I went to measure the inside distance for you guys and gals, which by the way is 8", I discovered that my hatch is not sealing up with the weather strip. Why is this so important to me? Well ever since I finished my project which included the new turbo system, new notchback, new QTP valve exhaust and also the deleting of the charcoal canister I started having problems with stange fumes entering into the car. I blamed the fuel lines from the tank to the now gone charcoal canister, I blamed the QTP, I blamed even small holes in the firewall in desperation. But now I know the real reason. Smoke is entering thru the back. There is almost 3/8" of gap all around the hatch and I noticed just now when I got to measure the distance, good thing I did! The problem is that if I lower the hatch more it will not be square to the body AGRRRR! Guess I will have to get a bigger rubber seal.

 

It it latching? I think you can adjust the mechanism, maybe lower it and it may solve your problem...

Does your hatch mount to the stock location in the car?

I did some serious weight savings on my car, one of them was elimination the motor to the hatch and replacing it with an aluminum turnbuckle to adjust height and be lightweight at the same time, but is fixed some sort of way. I could lower it but doing it will end up with the htach lower than the quarterpanels, it will look bad.

 

Here is picture of the gap that I am talking about. The camera does not make justice, the gap is big. I also noticed that the gap is apparently in just one side, driver's. I also took a picture of the adjusting method for the hatch, which I took just now in an attempt to lower the hatch. If I lower it more I have to smash the hatch so hard in order to close that something might break.

see that is what i need.. the mounts to lower it.. i have a camaro.. with an orig f-bird notchback... it will not mount with the shocks in place.. they hit the lid it self..

so if anyone knows.. let me know.. im to the point of fabrication...

For what I know all 3rd gen came with shock mounts there, stock location, what is so different on yours? The thing is that I am honestly not planning to remove those, I think I've never had to remove those before.

 

is yours an original knotchback?

i tried to close my lid down.. and the shocks hit my notchback..

i have seen a pic with the shock mounts about 2 inchs lower then the rest of the 3rd gens... this was only on an gta notchback.. nothingelse.

with the aftermarket deck lid... .. it fits with the stock mounting hardware..

since mine is an original lid.. it dont fit..

 

Mine is an aftermarket, Hawk's notchback. The shock are in the stock location just where they where before when it had the glass hatch.

check the classifieds for one or start a wanted thread. if you just want to buy a new one (aftermarket) I think hawks sells em.

 

i am having the same problem with mine. a 1/2 gap between the seal and hatch. i machined some brackets that bolt to the hatch.it lowered the attachment by 1 inch but its still not right. i will b working on it this week. i will let u kno wat i come up with.

 

ok i fixed it.i had alil bit t-6 alum. laying around so i machined some new brakets.the shocks sit an inch and a half lower than the o.e.m mounts on the hatch.i will get some pics up after i finsh painting the car.
