if rust was a flesh eating virus....
then my poor camaro is in for a long agonizing death. unless there is some sort of miracle rust stopper out there, my whip is screwed. im broke as a joke and havent really dealt with rust of this calibur before. all the metal in the affected areas just chips off in 1/2 in. size peices. fortunetly the frame is in one peice, but i want it to STAY in one peice. my dad bought some naval jelly but i've never used it and i heard works only so well. this stuff isn't really anything that can just be wirebrushed, bondoed, and painted either. this is car destroying rust. is there anything i can do to stop the spread and save the car?
any input appreciated

if you are looking for a solution to hold it from getting worse until something proper can be done to fix it, go to the store and pick up some cans of Rust Check and just soak the areas down. It really works and most importantly, seeps into the seams where the rust starts. Make sure you get the red can and not the green can. The green is more of a coating and will not seep.
Not seeing any pictures, if the rust is as bad as you say it is, i would recommend against using POR15 at this point (definitely after the repair work is done though). The reason i say this is that the rust started in the seams and that is the most important area to protect (ie, that is what destroys the car as you put it, when the seams rot out). POR15 will do nothing for the seams and the rust will stay in there, even if you clean up the surrounding area thinking you cured the problem. It is great for covering your floorboards or axle or things like that where there is surface rust or scabs on an open surface. And this comes from actually doing several tests with POR15 on various surfaces, various prep jobs beforehand (or just over the rust...which i don't advise), and in areas where there is rust in seams.
Hope this helps.

to answer this, sand off as much rust as you can, then spray it on. it will get in the seams and stuff better.

If you have ever heard of the Belvedere that was dug up from its Time Capsule in Tulsa Oklahoma you know about its rust issues. I've followed the story of the car for about a year or so now so I've been pretty interested in the car even before they brought up the rusty hulk. It turns out that the winner of the car had died around 1979 or so. His closest living relatives are here in MD. They are cousins that are in there upper 80's or 90's. They don't have much interest in the car but one of their sons is taking delivery of it in Frederick MD. It will most likely become a museum(sp) peice as they aren't going to go to tearing it completly down. (not that I've heard yet anyhow) The Son has gotten together with Ultra One which makes a safe rust remover and they are going to get rid of the rust.

Its very interesting.
By making a shower using a tarp(for a collecting point) and a sump pump to collect and push the rust remover up a hose to a sprayer. You can essentually desolve the rust from the car not hurting good metal or rubber parts.
I have not tried this stuff yet nor is this an advertisement for them. From the looks of things it works rather well. And its not tooo expencive if it really works as good as it says it dose.
Just thought I'd throw it out there. It is a possibilty to save a car.
