Replacing Ground Effects
This has probably been asked several thousand times and I can see where but does anyone have any idea on how to place the Passenger side Ground effects on a 1985 Trans am. This is for a newbie so please be very easy with tech terms.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
the ones on the door - pull the door panel then inside the door there will be 3 or 4 nuts to undo, then there will be one acorn nut on each side of the door (the acorn nuts are not in the actual door but the rest of the nuts are).
the rocker gfx - undo all the bolts in the door jam and underneath the car, probably 15 total. then pull the fender vent and there will be 2 nuts in there, then take out the plastic by the rear seats and you will see a black piece of rubber, pull this off and you'll gain access to a hole, in the hole there will be 1 nut to take off.
the rear quarter - there will be 3 bolts on the bottom on it, then 2 in the wheel well. after that pull out the interior plastic and there will be 3 nuts to take off.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
I'm sorry to bring this up for anyone who skimmed it the first time but I am having troubles. I have my parts and I recently spent a few HOURS trying to find out how to do this on my own with absolutely no luck so I was thinking you could help.
I would like a pretty straight forward answer on how to replace the part missing here.

I have tried myself and I am really unsure of how to do it. Thanks for any help guys, I honestly appreciate it.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
you have both metal mounting brackets on the ground effects right? because they just slide in the holes on the car then you tighten the nuts from the inside of the car.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
No I was attempting to slide the GFX over the brackets already on the vehicle. And I am really hesitant to remove something from the vehicle because I am very new to it and if I break it I would need to take money from my savings to replace my dumb ***.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
as far as I know you need to remove the brackets to mount the ground effects and dont worry, the only way you'll break em is if they're badly rusted.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
yeah you'll need to take off the door panel, run a search, Im sure its been covered many times, basically it is pretty self explanatory when you look at it though. I would do a write up on how to remove it but I dont really remember since i haven't had panels in my car for around a year lol

Oh yeah I looked at that. Good job on your restoration thus far for being so young. Did you grow up around cars.? I found an article on restoring your door panel so I will give it a shot thanks for the help bud. If I need anymore I'll post here.

thanks, I didn't grow up around cars, but I'm going to a technical high school so a good amount of my knowledge comes from there, mainly I just learn by experience though. good luck with your car

I don't know if you'll get this bud but I am looking at how to get the body part of the passenger side gfx on and I'm not sure what you mean in the door jamb and underneath.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
yep Im still subscribed to this thread.
and you'll see those bolts when you open the door you'll see them going straight across the bottom of the door opening (going from the front to the rear of the car)
and the ones beneath the car, when you look at the gfx piece theres little tabs reaching from the bottom side of the piece to underneath the car (they're probably 2-3 inches long) and they'll line up to bolt holes underneath the car.
hope this makes better sense, if not I can just snap a pic or two for ya.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
I ended up getting them on just fine but it took alot of work without any the right sockets for a few of them. Had to cut the old rusty bolts off. But thanks for all the help I'll post some pics

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
Sorry another question I was trying to tighten the bolts on the door part of the GFX kit and the two screws in 2 of the holes were the wrong size.... and just came out meaning I only have 3 bolts(2 on very side and 1 along the center) holding it on so it won't stay flush any way you know of that I can affix 2 of the good bolts I pulled out of the door(Assumed from the missing GFX) into the too large of holes that the guy before me made?

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
So the holes are actually larger than they should be? The way I see it you have a couple options, you could simply go to the hardware store and try to find bolts or screws that are large enough to fit the holes, or you could drill, tap, and heli-coil the holes and use the factory sized hardware.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
Well its hard to take a picture to show what I mean. The scale isn't much larger but what I have done atm is taken super strength Epoxy and filled the holes setting the original hardware into the holes to allow a bond. If that doesn't work(Should take 24 hours for a full set up) then I will take pictures to show you what I mean but this was my first choice. The point is that nothing will remain in the holes because they had cut chunks of screw(Apparently long screws cut badly jagged etc...) forced into the hole with a shitty puff silicone kind of stuff trying to hold them in(It didn't work at all) So what is the second option you gave me.

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
The second option I gave you was the use of a helicoil. Basically it's a thread insert. The way the work is this, first you drill the hole to a larger size, next you tap the hole with the tap that comes in the kit, the heli coil screws into the hole you tapped allowing you to use the origional size hardware. They work great and have saved me many times. I'm not sure if I'm understanding what you did correctly, did you simply fill the oversized holes with epoxy and stick the origional bolts in? If so how are you going to remove them so you can put the piece back on the car?

Re: Replacing Ground Effects
Well the only thing I have to do is place them against the car and attach the nuts onto the screws to hold it in place so I WANT them to not move at all

The epoxy held like a beast better than I hoped only I need to figure out what to look for on my door panel. Its the panel that holds the lock and unlock buttons. Anyone know?
