Welding the doors shut?
Welding the doors shut?
Does anyone know if its legal or not to have welded doors on a road car?
I just picked up and 86' Camaro for a project car and I'm looking to stiffen it as much as possible, I've already looked into the weld on SFC's which looks to be a good idea and plans are underway for a nice stiff cage also seeing as it is a t-top car.
I'm a little paranoid about the structure of the 3rd gens as I almost lost 4 friends to a TA that shook hands with a tree.
Thanks all!

i dont think thats a good idea nor do i think its legal. if it were welded shut how would you get out?? If you did wreck and needed to get out in a hurry, i dont think you'd beable to.
Plus i dont think that would make it any better/safer in an accident anyway. Just learn to drive the car better and not fool around too much on the street to eliminate chances of wrecking it anyway.

You do make a good point, I'm not as worried about it on the street as I am the strip. I saw what the tree did to the TA at 80 so I hate to think what a concrete barrier would do.
Its going to be a double duty car, although if it is indeed illegal its somewhat of a moot point then.

it's not the general lee, and it's definitely not indestructable like the general was either. if it's just going to be a road car what do you need a cage for?
sfc's are good, but if you're looking for a safe car buy a volvo

i dont think its legal at the drag strip either. they dont allow shaved door handles because in the event of a crash, they cant get you out and most tracks i seen dont have jaws of life
so just do a 10 pt cage and subframes if your paranoid about crashing

I totally agree with everyone, don't weld the door shut.
Just get a good cage.
